PART 4
Alejandro did not touch his mother.
That was how Elena knew the soldier had taken over.
Not the wounded son.
Not the betrayed husband.
The soldier.
He stood between the bed and the doorway, completely still.
Carmen had always mistaken stillness for obedience.
Tonight, she learned better.
“Alejandro,” she said.
“Lower your voice.”
He stared at her.
“My wife is covered in bruises.”
Ricardo lifted both hands.
“Bro, it’s not what it looks like.”
Alejandro turned his eyes to him.
Ricardo stepped back.
Elena clutched the blanket to her chest.
Her voice shook.
“They made me sign papers.”
Alejandro did not look away from Ricardo.
“What papers?”
Carmen answered too quickly.
“Household documents.”
“She was overwhelmed.”
“She signed willingly.”
Elena whispered, “No.”
Alejandro heard it.
He looked back at his wife.
Her lower lip trembled.
“They took my phone.”
“They sent you messages.”
“They said you would believe them.”
The pain on Alejandro’s face was worse than anger.
For months, he had been reading her silence as rejection.
For months, she had been begging through a wall he did not know existed.
He reached for his own phone.
Carmen snapped, “What are you doing?”
“Calling the police.”
Ricardo laughed nervously.
“Come on, man.”
“This is family.”
Alejandro looked at him.
“You stopped being family when you put your hands on her.”
Carmen stepped forward.
“You will not shame me in my son’s house.”
Elena flinched at the movement.
That was all it took.
Alejandro’s voice turned cold.
“Move again and I will have you removed in cuffs.”
Carmen stopped.
For the first time in Elena’s memory, Carmen looked uncertain.
Alejandro called 911.
Then he called his unit’s legal assistance officer.
Then he called an attorney Elena had once mentioned from the clinic.
Within twenty minutes, two police officers stood in the bedroom doorway.
Carmen cried immediately.
Ricardo pointed at Elena.
“She’s unstable.”
Alejandro lifted the blanket just enough to show the bruising on Elena’s wrists.
The room went silent.
Then Elena whispered, “The folder.”
Everyone turned.
“What folder?” Carmen asked sharply.
Elena looked at Alejandro.
“Loose floorboard.”
“Under your side of the bed.”
May you like
Carmen’s face drained.
