Alejandro went to the bank in uniform.
That was not an accident.
He wanted every person in that glass conference room to remember exactly whose deployment Carmen had exploited.
Elena stayed home with a victim advocate and two officers outside.
She wanted to go.
Her body was not ready.
Her evidence was.
The bank manager looked nervous when Alejandro entered with Attorney Harper Wells and a military legal officer.
Carmen and Ricardo were already seated.
Carmen wore navy.
Ricardo wore arrogance badly.
A closing packet sat on the table.
Alejandro looked at it.
Then at his mother.
“You were going to close without Elena present?”
Carmen folded her hands.
“She authorized it.”
Harper placed the hidden folder copies on the table.
“No, she did not.”
Ricardo leaned back.
“Those are copies.”
Harper smiled.
“Yes.”
“Copies are very convenient when originals disappear.”
The bank manager cleared his throat.
“We were told Mrs. Reyes was unavailable due to anxiety.”
Alejandro’s face went still.
“By whom?”
The manager looked at Carmen.
Carmen lifted her chin.
“My daughter-in-law is fragile.”
Alejandro took out the hospital report.
“She is injured.”
“By you.”
The manager’s expression changed.
Harper slid over the employment schedule showing Elena had been working when the deed was allegedly signed.
Then the phone records.
Then the blocked call log.
Then the photographs.
Then the police report.
The refinance stopped before the coffee cooled.
The bank froze the file and referred it to fraud review.
Carmen stood too fast.
“You are humiliating your family.”
Alejandro looked at her.
“You did that when you hurt my wife and used my absence as cover.”
Ricardo laughed.
“She’s got you trained.”
Alejandro turned to him.
“Say one more word about her.”
Ricardo did not.
For all his cruelty, he knew the difference between a brother he could manipulate and a soldier who had already chosen his side.
By the end of the meeting, the bank confirmed no funds would move.
The fraudulent deed would be challenged.
Carmen’s access to all household accounts was revoked.
Ricardo’s name appeared in three suspicious withdrawal requests.
Outside, Carmen grabbed Alejandro’s sleeve.
“You owe me loyalty.”
He removed her hand.
“No.”
“I owed you truth.”
