PART 5

Alejandro knelt beside the bed and lifted the loose floorboard.

For one terrible second, Elena worried the folder was gone.

Then his fingers found the plastic sleeve.

He pulled it out slowly.

Carmen made a small sound in her throat.

Ricardo said, “That’s private.”

The officer looked at him.

“Whose privacy are you protecting?”

Ricardo shut up.

Inside the folder were copies of documents.

The power of attorney Carmen said was temporary.

The quitclaim deed Elena refused to sign until Ricardo held her wrist hard enough to leave bruises.

Screenshots of messages sent from Elena’s phone while she was locked in the pantry.

Photographs Elena had taken of her own injuries in the bathroom mirror.

A handwritten timeline.

August 12.

Carmen took mail.

August 19.

Ricardo blocked call app.

September 2.

Carmen slapped me.

September 17.

They said Alejandro would choose blood.

October 4.

Forced signature.

October 28.

Ricardo pushed me into dresser.

November 9.

Carmen said wives can be replaced.

Alejandro read the last line twice.

His face changed in a way Elena could not read.

Then he looked at Carmen.

“You said that?”

Carmen’s lips pressed together.

“She was twisting my words.”

Elena’s voice was small but clear.

“No.”

“You said it while I was bleeding.”

One officer stepped closer to Carmen.

The other asked Elena if she wanted medical documentation.

Alejandro answered before she could, then stopped himself.

He looked at Elena.

Her choice.

Elena nodded.

“Yes.”

Carmen’s voice rose.

“This is absurd.”

“My son just came home.”

“You are turning him against his own mother.”

Alejandro stood.

“No.”

“You did that while I was gone.”

Ricardo tried one more lie.

“She wanted the refinance.”

“We were helping.”

Alejandro held up the deed copy.

“Then why is my wife’s signature dated on a day she was working a twelve-hour shift at the clinic?”

Ricardo blinked.

Elena looked at Alejandro.

He knew.

Of course he knew.

He had memorized her schedules from across the world because loving her had always meant counting hours until they could talk.

The officer took the folder.

Carmen watched it leave her reach.

That was when she finally stopped crying.
