PART 3

It began with keys.

Carmen said she needed a spare in case Elena had an emergency.

Then she used it without calling.

She entered the house at breakfast.

At night.

During Elena’s showers.

She opened mail on the kitchen table and said, “This is family business.”

Ricardo started coming with her.

He claimed Alejandro had asked him to check the property.

Elena knew Alejandro had done no such thing.

But when she said so, Carmen smiled.

“You think my son tells you everything?”

The first document appeared in August.

A power of attorney.

Temporary, Carmen said.

Only while Alejandro was deployed.

Only to help manage military benefits and household expenses.

Elena refused.

Carmen’s smile disappeared.

“You are selfish.”

“Do you want him worrying about bills while he could be killed?”

Ricardo leaned against the counter.

“Just sign it.”

Elena called Alejandro that night.

The call never connected.

Later, she learned Ricardo had changed the Wi-Fi settings and blocked her international call app “by accident.”

Then the pressure turned physical.

Not all at once.

That was how they kept her confused.

Ricardo grabbed her wrist when she tried to take back a folder.

Carmen shoved her shoulder when Elena stood between her and the file cabinet.

They apologized afterward.

Then blamed her for making things tense.

The second document was worse.

A quitclaim deed.

Carmen said it was only for refinancing.

Ricardo said Alejandro had already approved it.

Elena demanded proof.

Carmen slapped her.

Elena stood frozen, one hand on her cheek.

Carmen’s voice was soft and vicious.

“My son is risking his life.”

“And you are sitting here pretending this house belongs to you.”

Elena tried to leave.

Ricardo blocked the door.

That night, they took her phone.

They sent Alejandro a message from it.

I need space.

Elena saw the message later and screamed.

Ricardo grabbed her by both arms and shook her until her head hit the wall.

That was the first bruise Alejandro would later see.

Then came the lie that finally broke her.

Carmen said if Elena told Alejandro, he would believe his mother.

“Blood first,” Carmen whispered.

“Wives can be replaced.”

Elena stopped fighting out loud after that.

But she did not stop completely.

She hid one folder beneath the loose floorboard in the bedroom.

Copies.

Photos.

Dates.

Every signature they forced.

Every bruise they created.
