PART 2

Before deployment, Elena had been the warmest thing in Alejandro’s life.

She danced barefoot in the kitchen.

She left sticky notes in his duffel bag.

She called him “Captain Serious” whenever he folded laundry like it was field equipment.

Their house was small but peaceful.

A two-bedroom home outside San Antonio with yellow curtains, a cracked porch step, and a garden Elena insisted would survive despite Alejandro’s total inability to keep basil alive.

They had bought it together.

At least, that was what Elena believed.

Alejandro had paid the down payment using savings from years of service.

Elena had paid the closing costs from her nursing job.

Both names were on the deed.

That mattered later.

Carmen hated the house from the beginning.

She called it too modest.

Too far from family.

Too independent.

She said a married son should not forget his mother.

Ricardo laughed and said Alejandro had become “domesticated.”

Alejandro ignored them because he thought jealousy was harmless.

He was wrong.

The week before he deployed, Carmen came over with groceries and tears.

She said Elena would need family support.

She said military wives became lonely.

She said bills and paperwork could overwhelm a young woman.

Elena thanked her politely.

Alejandro kissed Elena on the forehead and said, “Only trust what we decide together.”

Elena promised.

Then he left.

At first, the calls were normal.

Elena showed him the garden.

He showed her the tiny corner of his bunk where he taped her picture.

Then Carmen started appearing in the background.

Then Ricardo.

Then Elena stopped talking freely.

She said she was tired.

She said the shifts at the clinic were hard.

She said Carmen was helping.

Alejandro believed her because he wanted to.

Then Carmen called him privately.

“She is not doing well.”

Ricardo called next.

“She’s been acting strange, man.”

Then came bank alerts Alejandro could not understand from overseas.

Transfers.

Document fees.

A missed mortgage notice.

When he asked Elena, she texted.

I handled it.

Don’t worry.

It did not sound like her.

But war teaches you to survive with incomplete information.

So Alejandro waited.

Every day, he waited.

While back home, Elena was being surrounded.
