Chapter 12 - THE FIRST CHILD

The earlier incident involved a six-year-old boy named Mason.

He was the son of a former Monroe Development employee.

Three years earlier, Arthur hosted a company picnic at the family estate. Mason accidentally scratched the side of Arthur’s new car with a toy.

Witnesses heard Arthur shouting.

Minutes later, the child was found near the garage with a broken wrist.

Arthur said Mason fell from a low wall.

Charles paid the family’s medical expenses and offered the father a promotion in exchange for a confidentiality agreement.

The promotion never occurred.

The employee left the company months later.

Clara had attended the picnic but left before the injury.

Victoria later described the accident as proof that children should be supervised more carefully.

No one mentioned Arthur.

Rachel located Mason’s family.

His father had preserved photographs of bruising around the boy’s upper arm. The injury suggested someone grabbed and threw him.

Mason, now nine, remembered Arthur lifting him near the car.

His family had never reported it because Charles threatened to accuse the father of workplace theft.

The hidden master archive likely contained the original internal investigation.

Arthur’s pattern was older than Gigi.

Charles’s protection was too.

Dr. Hart reviewed only the medical records supplied with the family’s consent. She noted that Mason’s injury documentation resembled forceful restraint.

The doctor would not declare what happened beyond the evidence.

That restraint made Clara trust her more.

Charles had spent years forcing conclusions to serve him.

Dr. Hart let facts remain facts.

Mason’s father provided an old voicemail from Victoria.

Arthur feels terrible about the misunderstanding. Continuing these accusations will only frighten your son and harm your career.

The language matched her messages to Clara.

Minimize the injury.

Call the response emotional.

Threaten the protector.

Preserve Arthur.

Rachel obtained a warrant for the company server based on evidence of altered trust documents, coercion, and the earlier concealed incident.

When officers reached Monroe Development, the server room was overheating.

The cooling system had been disabled.

Several drives had been removed.

Charles claimed a technical failure.

Security footage showed him entering the room after his police interview.

He carried a hard case.

The hallway camera lost signal for seven minutes.

When it returned, smoke was visible near the server rack.

Charles had begun destroying the master archive.

A fire-suppression system activated before the building ignited.

Technicians recovered damaged drives, but the central encrypted backup was missing.

Arthur called Clara again that evening.

“I have it,” he said.

“The archive?”

“A copy.”

“Why?”

“Insurance against Charles.”

“Give it to the police.”

“Not until I have a deal.”

“You hit Gigi.”

“And Charles planned everything.”

“You still did it.”

Arthur breathed heavily.

“If you refuse, he destroys me and keeps the company.”

“You are already responsible for what you did.”

“You sound like Daniel.”

Clara gripped the phone.

“Daniel protected his child.”

“And look what happened to him.”

The line became silent.

“What does that mean?” Clara asked.

Arthur ended the call.

Daniel had died after a long illness diagnosed as an aggressive autoimmune condition.

No one had ever suggested anything suspicious.

But Charles controlled his company insurance, appointments, and estate communication during the final months.

Clara refused to let one ambiguous sentence create a new theory without evidence.

Rachel agreed.

“Arthur may be trying to frighten you into negotiating.”

Still, investigators requested Daniel’s archived medical and estate records.

At the hospital, Gigi was cleared to leave.

Dr. Hart completed one final photograph under standardized lighting. The bruise now showed the full shape of the hand that struck her.

She sealed it with the earlier images to preserve progression.

Clara lifted Gigi into her arms.

The child touched the doctor’s sleeve.

“Bye.”

Dr. Hart smiled gently.

“Bye, Gigi.”

As Clara prepared to leave through the protected exit, Rachel received an emergency alert.

Arthur had sent a location for the archive copy.

It was inside the Monroe mansion.

He claimed Charles had already discovered it.

👉 The master archive was still inside the family home, and Arthur’s warning suggested Charles was racing to destroy the final record before police could reach it.
