Chapter 2 - THE MANDATORY REPORT
Dr. Hart closed the examination-room door.
“Clara, I am required to report suspected child abuse.”
“I understand.”
“Do you and Gigi live with Arthur?”
“No. We have an apartment across town.”
“Does he have regular access to her?”
Clara hesitated.
Every Sunday dinner.
Every holiday.
Every family event Victoria insisted was mandatory.
Arthur appeared whenever he needed money, praise, or an audience. Charles protected him because Arthur managed the Monroe family development company. Victoria protected him because she believed sons preserved family power and daughters created problems.
“He sees her when my parents demand it,” Clara answered.
Dr. Hart looked at the healing yellow mark near Gigi’s wrist.
“What happened here?”
Clara’s stomach tightened.
Three weeks earlier, Gigi returned from the kitchen crying while Arthur stood near the refrigerator. Victoria said the child had caught her arm in a cabinet.
Clara had believed the explanation because she had not seen the incident.
Or because believing it was easier than confronting what she already suspected.
“She supposedly fell.”
Dr. Hart photographed the wrist too.
“The shape is consistent with forceful gripping.”
Clara sat down.
Gigi remained on the examination bed, clutching a hospital sticker in one hand and Clara’s finger in the other.
Dr. Hart spoke softly.
“You brought her here. That matters.”
“It should have happened sooner.”
“Self-blame will not preserve evidence or protect her. Your decisions from this moment forward will.”
A nurse entered and confirmed that law enforcement had been notified.
Clara’s phone began ringing.
Arthur.
She declined the call.
He called again.
Then Victoria.
Then Charles.
Clara blocked all three numbers, but messages continued through the family group chat.
Arthur wrote that Clara had attacked him without provocation.
Victoria claimed Gigi had fallen against the table and that Clara was exaggerating a minor accident.
Charles warned that making false allegations could damage Clara’s position inside the family company.
Dr. Hart watched Clara’s face.
“What position?”
“My grandfather left me forty percent of Monroe Development.”
“Does Arthur control the rest?”
“Charles controls thirty-five. Arthur has twenty-five.”
The doctor’s concern deepened.
The birthday party had not been only for Gigi.
After cake, Charles intended to hold a “family business discussion.” Clara had been told to bring identification and sign updated corporate documents.
She had refused to review anything before the party.
Victoria accused her of distrusting her own family.
Arthur called her selfish.
“Were the documents at the house?” Dr. Hart asked.
“Yes.”
“What would your signature have changed?”
“I don’t know.”
The emergency-room door opened.
Detective Rachel Moore entered carrying a notebook and body camera.
She crouched several feet from Gigi without approaching too closely.
“My name is Rachel. I’m here because the doctor called us.”
Clara unlocked the digital folder.
“I have recordings.”
Rachel glanced at the screen.
“How many?”
“Hundreds of messages. Eleven audio files. Photographs of earlier incidents. Copies of papers they tried to make me sign.”
“Have the originals been altered?”
“No. The folder uploads automatically to an encrypted account.”
Rachel looked at her with new seriousness.
“You planned for someone to take your phone.”
“My family has taken it before.”
That answer changed the room.
Clara opened the first recording.
Victoria’s voice filled the examination area.
Arthur loses control when you challenge him. Stop provoking your brother and there will be no scenes.
Clara’s recorded voice answered:
He threw a plate beside Gigi.
Charles then spoke:
The company depends on Arthur. We will not destroy his future over one emotional moment.
Rachel stopped the recording.
“When was this?”
“Six months ago.”
“Was Gigi present?”
“Yes.”
The detective began a formal evidence transfer.
As the files copied, a new email reached Clara from Charles.
Attached was a prepared statement.
It claimed Gigi had been injured when Clara assaulted Arthur during a psychiatric outburst.
