Chapter 13 - THE HOUSE WITHOUT A PARTY

The mansion looked different without gold balloons and guests.

Police vehicles filled the circular driveway. The main entrance stood open beneath harsh security lights.

Clara remained at a protected location with Gigi while Rachel coordinated the search.

Arthur’s message identified a safe behind the ballroom curtains.

Officers found the safe open.

Empty.

A trail of torn evidence labels led toward Charles’s office.

Victoria stood in the foyer, crying and accusing Charles of destroying the family.

Charles remained inside his study with the door locked.

“Come out with your hands visible,” Rachel ordered.

“This is a civil dispute,” he called back.

“You interfered with a criminal investigation.”

“You are misinterpreting privileged corporate records.”

Smoke began leaking beneath the door.

Officers forced it open.

Charles stood beside the fireplace feeding documents into the flames. A metal drive case rested on the desk.

Rachel extinguished the papers while another officer restrained him.

The drive case contained three storage devices.

None matched Arthur’s description of the master archive.

Charles claimed Arthur had taken it.

Victoria shouted from the hallway.

“He keeps another copy inside the cake platform!”

Police returned to the dining area.

The white birthday cake had been removed, but the decorative table remained. Beneath the drawer that held the company documents was a second concealed compartment.

Inside lay a black voice recorder and an encrypted drive.

Arthur had hidden them before the party.

He had not trusted Charles even while helping him.

The recorder captured weeks of planning.

Charles instructed Arthur to confront Clara beside the cake table because cameras would be disabled and guests would assume a family disagreement.

Victoria rehearsed statements about Clara’s instability.

Mercer explained how a public outburst could support emergency guardianship.

Arthur asked whether frightening Gigi was necessary.

Charles answered:

Children expose a mother’s weakness faster than money does.

Arthur laughed.

“What if I make the kid cry?”

“Better.”

Clara listened from the protected room the following morning.

The laughter affected her more than shouting would have.

Gigi’s fear had been a feature of the plan.

Another recording concerned Mason.

Charles ordered his employee file altered after the picnic injury.

Arthur said:

The boy scratched my car.

Charles replied:

Then next time, control yourself where no one can photograph it.

He did not condemn the violence.

He criticized the evidence.

The archive also contained the unedited family videos used in Clara’s custody file.

In each one, Arthur provoked her before Victoria began recording.

A complete Thanksgiving clip showed Arthur gripping Gigi’s wrist. Clara shouted and pulled him away. Victoria’s edited version began only after Clara raised her voice.

The secret archive turned years of manipulation back toward its creators.

Charles was detained for evidence destruction and obstruction while investigators reviewed broader charges.

Victoria requested protection from him and offered testimony.

Arthur remained missing.

Paul Mercer attempted to withdraw from all family representation, but the recovered recordings placed him inside the planning sessions.

The company board suspended Charles and Arthur.

Clara refused to assume immediate control.

“My daughter was injured yesterday,” she told the independent board attorney. “I am not turning her medical crisis into a corporate victory.”

The patents and trust would remain frozen until an independent review could separate Gigi’s assets from Monroe Development.

At the protected hotel, Clara bought a small white cake from a grocery store.

No formal guests.

No speeches.

No company documents beneath the table.

Only Clara, Gigi, Dr. Hart’s hospital sticker, and a replacement set of soft paper ribbons that tore easily when little fingers pulled them.

Gigi touched one and looked toward Clara.

“Okay?”

Clara smiled through tears.

“Yes. You can touch it.”

The child pulled the ribbon free.

Nothing terrible happened.

Then Clara’s phone vibrated.

Arthur had sent a photograph of himself holding the missing hard drive from her apartment.

Behind him stood a wall covered with printed medical records.

Daniel’s records.

A message followed:

Charles lied about how Daniel died. The proof is in the confidential folder.

👉 Arthur had finally connected the stolen computer to Daniel’s final illness, but Clara still did not know whether he possessed evidence or another weapon designed to control her.
