Arthur demanded immunity.
Rachel told him he could not negotiate directly with Clara.
He sent the files anyway.
Most were copies of Daniel’s medical bills and appointment schedules. Nothing immediately suggested wrongdoing.
One document stood out.
During Daniel’s final hospitalization, Charles authorized a private medication consultation without Clara’s knowledge.
The consultant worked for a company owned by Monroe Development.
The medication itself was legitimate, but Daniel’s physician had rejected it because of dangerous interactions.
Charles later claimed the consultation never occurred.
A printed message inside Arthur’s photograph suggested otherwise.
Proceed outside the hospital record. Daniel’s decline will accelerate the transfer timeline.
The sender’s initials were C.M.
Charles Monroe.
Rachel warned Clara that a printed page could be forged.
The original digital source was necessary.
Arthur claimed it remained inside the confidential evidence file on Clara’s damaged hard drive.
Technicians had recovered only part of that file.
The final section required a second encryption key.
Daniel’s sealed box contained one key.
The black recorder from the cake platform contained another.
Charles and Arthur each controlled part of the information.
Daniel had designed the security so no single family member could rewrite the estate.
Clara authorized forensic decryption under law-enforcement supervision.
Hours passed.
Gigi slept beside her, one hand curled around Clara’s finger.
Dr. Hart called to check on the child’s pain and confirm that the evidence transfer remained complete.
Clara told her about the new Daniel file.
The doctor responded carefully.
“I cannot determine anything about his treatment without authenticated records and medical review.”
“I know.”
“You are allowed to want answers without deciding the answer in advance.”
Clara needed that reminder.
Her family turned suspicion into certainty whenever certainty benefited them.
She would not repeat their method.
Victoria agreed to another recorded interview.
She denied knowledge of interference with Daniel’s care but admitted Charles had been impatient for the patents to move into company control.
“Daniel was dying,” she said. “Charles believed delays harmed everyone.”
“Did Arthur know?”
“Arthur knows fragments and turns them into threats.”
“Did Charles authorize treatment outside the hospital?”
Victoria looked away.
“He spoke with a consultant.”
“Did Clara know?”
“No.”
“Did Daniel consent?”
“I don’t know.”
The interview provided no complete answer.
Then forensic technicians unlocked the first layer of the confidential file.
It contained Daniel’s own medical journal.
He wrote that Charles repeatedly pressured him to sign the patent transfer while sedated. Daniel refused and asked a nurse to keep the documents away from his room.
A hospital note confirmed the request.
The second layer contained printed messages between Charles and Mercer discussing how Daniel’s incapacity would affect voting control.
Again, deeply unethical.
Not yet proof of causing his death.
The final encrypted section was labeled:
GIGI—FUTURE SAFETY.
Clara’s breath caught.
Daniel had created it for their daughter.
Before the system opened, the hotel fire alarm sounded.
Rachel immediately moved Clara and Gigi toward the secured stairwell.
No smoke appeared.
The alarm panel showed activation from the service floor.
A man wearing a catering uniform had entered minutes earlier carrying a medical video-camera case.
Hotel security found the empty uniform in a restroom.
Arthur had reached the building.
On Clara’s phone, the confidential folder showed an attempted remote login.
Someone was trying to erase it while she evacuated.
Rachel disconnected the device from every network.
The deletion stopped at ninety-three percent.
Only one file remained unopened.
Its title matched the evidence folder Dr. Hart had preserved after Gigi’s examination.
