Chapter 20 - DANIEL’S MESSAGE TO A CHILD WHO DID NOT EXIST YET
Leo’s phone had never connected to a public network.
Daniel recorded the video during his final hospitalization and placed the device inside Evelyn Price’s sealed archive.
Evelyn claimed she did not know who the message concerned until Hawthorne’s records identified Leo.
Clara did not accept the explanation without verification.
Forensic technicians confirmed the video had not been altered.
Daniel appeared weaker than in the message prepared for Clara. His voice broke between sentences, but his mind remained clear.
“If you are watching this, someone used the reproductive authorization I refused to sign.”
Leo’s face changed.
Clara covered her mouth.
Daniel continued.
“Charles wants another child tied to the patent trust. He believes two heirs will make Clara easier to remove and the estate easier to place under professional control.”
Daniel had discovered a clinic request bearing his signature. He reported it to the patient-rights office and ordered every stored sample destroyed.
The clinic sent confirmation.
That confirmation was false.
“I do not know whether a child will be born,” Daniel said. “If one is, the child is not responsible for the crime surrounding the birth.”
He had amended the trust to protect any surviving biological child.
Not because he authorized the conception.
Because he feared Charles had already succeeded.
The message addressed Leo directly.
“You may be told I abandoned you. The truth is that I did not know where to find you. You may be told Clara or Gigi took what belonged to you. They did not.”
Leo looked away from the screen.
Daniel’s final instruction was simple.
No adult should gain custody, voting control or financial authority merely by claiming to reunite the siblings.
Leo must receive independent representation.
Gigi’s share could not be reduced to fund his care.
Leo’s share could not be controlled through Gigi.
The children’s rights were separate.
The family relationship, if one developed, belonged to them.
Charles had tried to turn siblings into competing keys.
Daniel anticipated that too.
The video ended.
Leo remained silent for nearly a minute.
“Did he love me?” he asked his advocate.
Clara answered only after Leo allowed her to.
“He cared enough to protect a child he feared might exist. I cannot tell you what he would have felt after meeting you.”
Leo studied Daniel’s frozen image.
“That is not the same as love.”
“No.”
Clara would not give him a beautiful lie because the truth felt incomplete.
Arthur requested to see the recording.
Leo refused.
The video concerned him.
Cooperation with police did not grant Arthur access to another child’s most private evidence.
Investigators located the gestational carrier through clinic payment records.
Her name was Hannah Vale.
She had been twenty-two, struggling with medical debt and told the embryo belonged to a married couple unable to carry a pregnancy.
Charles’s consultant showed her photographs of Daniel and Clara.

The clinic director admitted Samuel Vane—the medication consultant involved in Daniel’s care—had also supervised the embryo transfer.
Daniel’s decline and Leo’s conception were connected through one physician.
Vane had disappeared after Daniel died.

Daniel’s autoimmune disease had been real and severe.

The medication accelerated liver failure and reduced the time Daniel had to challenge the estate transfers.

Inside was a recent recording of Charles speaking from custody.
“If Vane confirms the consultation, activate the child’s maternal file.”
No one understood the instruction until Hannah’s sealed birth history opened.
Her biological mother was Victoria Monroe.
