Chapter 8 - DANIEL’S WARNING
Daniel’s recording was thirteen minutes long.
His voice sounded weaker than Clara remembered, but his words remained precise.
He explained that Charles had repeatedly asked him to merge Gigi’s future trust with Monroe Development. Daniel refused because Arthur’s division carried hidden debt.
“Charles believes every family asset should protect the company,” Daniel said. “He does not recognize a boundary between love and ownership.”
Daniel had placed the land, a life-insurance account, and several patents inside an independent trust for Gigi.
The patents concerned a building material Daniel developed before his illness. A national manufacturer had expressed interest in licensing them.
Charles wanted the rights transferred into Monroe Development.
Daniel refused.
After his death, Clara became Gigi’s trustee.
If Clara were declared incapable or lost guardianship, a temporary family custodian could seek control.
The designated backup custodian named in Daniel’s original documents was not Victoria or Charles.
It was Clara’s independent accountant.
The custody petition contained an altered trust summary naming Victoria.
Someone had changed the page after Daniel’s death.
Clara’s secret folder held a scan of the original version Daniel emailed her.
Rachel compared it with the copy found in Charles’s office.
The signatures matched.
The custodian page did not.
“They substituted one page inside an otherwise authentic document,” Rachel said.
The method resembled the company agreements.
Preserve enough truth to hide the lie.
Daniel’s recording continued.
“I have stored the original estate file with Clara’s medical advocate.”
Clara looked toward Dr. Hart.
“I don’t have a medical advocate.”
Not now.
But during Daniel’s final hospitalization, a patient-rights attorney named Evelyn Price helped him prepare advance directives. Clara remembered Evelyn asking unusually detailed questions about who could make decisions for Gigi.
Daniel may have trusted her with the confidential file.
Rachel began searching for contact information.
Dr. Hart completed the follow-up examination.
Gigi’s cheek remained swollen, but her neurological responses were normal. The doctor prepared discharge instructions while emphasizing that the medical record would remain sealed and preserved.
“Where will you go tonight?” she asked.
“Not home.”
Clara’s apartment keys were inside the diaper bag at the Monroe house.
Officers could retrieve them, but Rachel advised using a confidential hotel arranged through a victim-support program until the family’s access was assessed.
Charles knew the apartment address.
Arthur had once entered with an emergency key Victoria claimed was necessary for family safety.
Clara agreed to leave through a private hospital exit.
Before discharge, Gigi became upset when a nurse tried to remove the adhesive monitor from her finger.
Clara held her and whispered reassurance.
The child slowly relaxed.
Dr. Hart observed the interaction.
“This is important too.”
“What is?”
“She seeks safety from you and calms in your care. Your family’s petition describes her as frightened of you.”
Clara looked toward the sealed custody folder on Rachel’s tablet.
They had written a child who did not exist.
A frightened child who feared her mother.
An unstable mother who attacked without cause.
A devoted uncle who never raised his hand.
A protective family trying to help.
Reality stood beneath the examination light: Gigi holding Clara’s finger while a bruise spread across her cheek.
Rachel returned with information about Evelyn Price.
She had died the previous year.
Her law office closed soon afterward.
The storage company handling her archived files reported that one sealed box remained under Daniel’s name.
A courier had attempted to collect it that morning.
The authorization carried Charles’s signature.
The storage company refused because Daniel’s instructions required Clara’s physical presence.
Charles had known about the confidential evidence before the birthday party.
