Chapter 4 - THE FOLDER IN CHARLES’S OFFICE
The custody folder contained a petition that had not yet been filed.
It asked the court to appoint Victoria and Charles as Gigi’s temporary guardians on the grounds that Clara suffered from emotional instability, uncontrolled aggression, and “dangerous hostility toward male relatives.”
Arthur’s name appeared repeatedly as a witness.
The petition described him as a respected businessman and devoted uncle.
No mention appeared of the plate he threw, the wrist he bruised, or the slap that sent Gigi stumbling across the birthday floor.
A psychologist’s draft letter stated that Clara demonstrated symptoms consistent with paranoia and family alienation.
The psychologist had never met her.
Rachel read the scan from the officer at the house.
“This document was drafted three weeks ago.”
The date matched the day after Clara refused to sign voting authority over her company shares.
Charles had described the papers as a temporary management arrangement. Clara’s independent accountant warned that the agreement would allow Charles and Arthur to outvote her permanently.
She canceled the meeting.
The next evening, Victoria began questioning whether Clara’s grief over her late husband had made her incapable of raising a child alone.
“They linked the company dispute to custody,” Clara said.
“Leverage,” Rachel replied. “If you believed resisting the documents could cost you your daughter, you might sign.”
Dr. Hart remained beside Gigi.
“Was today’s birthday gathering intended to create an incident?”
Rachel looked at the prepared statement and custody folder.
“It appears someone expected confrontation.”
The detective called the officers searching the house.
The dining room had already been partially cleaned when they arrived. The broken glass was gone. The ribbons had been retied. A housekeeper was wiping the floor beneath the chair Arthur struck.
Charles claimed he wanted to protect guests from broken glass.
Rachel ordered the cleaning stopped.
Arthur’s drink can was recovered from the kitchen trash.
Victoria had changed out of the blouse Clara struck while escaping.
The blouse was inside a washing machine.
The cycle had already begun.
“They’re destroying context,” Rachel said.
Clara opened her digital folder and selected an audio file from two nights earlier.
She had left her phone recording inside the diaper bag while collecting Gigi from the Monroe house.
Charles and Victoria were speaking in the dining room.
“If she refuses again,” Victoria said, “Arthur will make her react.”
Charles answered, “Not in front of the wrong people.”
“We choose the guests.”
“And the cameras?”
“Dining room off. Hallway on.”
Clara had listened to only the beginning before the party. The words frightened her, but she had not understood the full meaning.
Rachel played the remaining audio.
Victoria said:
Once Clara creates a public scene, Mercer can attach it to the guardianship petition.
Charles replied:
The child must appear frightened of her mother, not Arthur.
The recording ended when someone moved the diaper bag.
Clara felt sick.
They had expected Arthur to provoke her.
But Gigi’s slap may not have been planned. Arthur’s anger had moved faster than their controlled scenario.
Instead of making Clara look dangerous, he exposed himself.
“Who is Mercer?” Rachel asked.
“The family attorney.”
Rachel contacted the officers at the house.
A man named Paul Mercer was currently inside Charles’s study claiming attorney-client privilege over the custody folder.
The detective issued instructions to seal the room without reviewing protected legal communications until a warrant could define the search.
Clara stared at the examination light above Gigi.
“My parents planned to frighten her and blame me.”
Dr. Hart’s voice remained steady.
“And Arthur’s injury to her is now documented independently.”
A nurse entered with a clear evidence container.
The hospital had collected fibers from Gigi’s cheek where glitter from Arthur’s sleeve transferred during the slap.
Arthur’s party jacket, visible in guest photographs, had matching gold glitter along one cuff.
The medical injury, Clara’s evidence folder, and the party clothing were beginning to form a single timeline.
Then Rachel received a message from the house.
Charles claimed the security system had suffered a total failure ten minutes before the party.
Yet the service-entrance camera was still recording.
