Claire Vale stood near the back of the elite New York funeral chapel, wearing a plain black coat and the kind of grief nobody in the room wanted to respect.
Her father’s polished coffin rested beneath crystal chandeliers and white flowers.

Nathan Cole, her father’s attorney, stood beside the coffin with a thick stack of legal documents against his chest.
Then he lifted one hand and pointed directly toward Claire.
“Claire Vale, please come forward.”
Every mourner turned.
