Evelyn Vale had always valued appearance over mercy.

Claire knew that better than anyone.

At dinners, Evelyn corrected posture, tone, lipstick shade, timing, grief, gratitude, and silence.

Especially silence.

When Claire was accused, Evelyn’s first question was not, “Is this true?”

It was, “Do you understand what this will do to your father’s name?”

That was the Vale family sickness.

The name mattered more than the person carrying it.

Now Evelyn stood beside Grant with one hand over her mouth, pearls pressed against her black dress.

She looked frightened.

Not for Claire.

Not for Henry.

For the family secret surfacing in a room full of executives.

Claire watched her stepmother’s eyes move from Nathan to the sealed page, then briefly toward Vanessa.

Too brief.

But Claire saw it.

Nathan saw it too.

“You may sit, Mrs. Vale,” he said.

Evelyn did not move.

Vanessa snapped, “This is inappropriate.”

Nathan’s voice stayed calm.

“The will reading is proceeding exactly as your father instructed.”

Claire’s breath caught.

Your father.

Not Henry.

Not Mr. Vale.

Your father.

Nathan had said it in front of everyone.

Claire bowed her head for one second.
