Chapter 8

Vanessa tried one final performance.

Her eyes filled.

Her hand moved to her chest.

“Daddy was ill,” she said. “He was confused near the end.”

Nathan looked at her over his glasses.

“The document was signed under medical certification, witnessed twice, and recorded.”

Vanessa’s tears stopped too quickly.

Grant noticed.

So did Claire.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Nathan continued, “You may challenge it through proper channels after this reading.”

After.

That word trapped Vanessa.

She wanted to stop the moment before the sealed page entered the air.

Once read, even partially, the truth would no longer belong only to the dead.

Claire looked at Nathan.

“Then read the page explaining who framed me.”

A wave of murmurs passed through the chapel.

Nathan slid one finger beneath the seal.

Vanessa whispered, “Don’t.”

It was barely audible.

But Grant heard.

His face changed.

Claire heard too.

That single word told her more than an apology ever could.

Do not read.

Not because it was false.

Because it was dangerous.

Nathan paused, not because Vanessa commanded him, but because Henry’s instructions seemed to require precision.

He lifted the page.

The contents remained hidden from the camera of the room’s attention.
