Chapter 9

Grant stepped closer to Vanessa.
“What did you do?”
She turned on him.
“Nothing.”
The answer came too fast.
Claire remembered saying the same word years earlier.
I did nothing.
No one believed her then.
Now everyone seemed to hear the difference.
Nathan raised one hand.
“This is not an interrogation. It is a reading.”
Grant stopped, but his eyes stayed on Vanessa.
Claire realized something painful.
The truth would not return the years.
It would not restore her father.
It would not undo the nights she counted money for rent while her family held galas under her old name.
It would not erase the headlines.
It would not make Grant’s doubt harmless.
Still, truth mattered.
Not because it healed everything.
Because lies continue harming people until someone pins them down.
Nathan drew breath to begin.
Evelyn gripped her pearls so tightly her knuckles whitened.
Vanessa’s face had gone pale.
The executives behind her shifted in their seats.
Claire stood beside the coffin, grief and resolve braided together.
She did not know how much Nathan would reveal today.
Not the entire inheritance.
Not every crime.
Not the final consequences.
But enough.

Enough to prove the lie had a name.
