Chapter 5

Grant Mercer had once promised Claire he would believe her before anyone else.

He said it on a rainy night in Boston, years before the scandal, when Claire confessed she was afraid her family only loved success.

“I know you,” Grant told her. “That will always matter more than what they say.”

Then the boardroom happened.

Documents appeared.

Vanessa cried.

Evelyn accused.

Henry dismissed.

And Grant looked at Claire with doubt in his eyes.

That was the moment she learned promises are easiest before they cost something.

Now Grant stood behind Vanessa in the chapel, older, sharper, still wearing the controlled expression of a man who hated being surprised.

But he was surprised now.

“Vanessa… what is he talking about?”

Vanessa did not answer.

Claire looked at him for the first time since the funeral began.

No anger crossed her face.

Only distance.

That hurt him more.

Grant stepped slightly away from Vanessa.

It was small.

But everyone near the coffin saw it.

Vanessa saw it too.

Her eyes flashed.

“Don’t look at me like that,” she whispered.

Grant’s voice lowered.

“Then answer me.”

Nathan held the sealed page unopened.

The silence became unbearable.

Claire realized the room did not need the full truth yet.
