Chapter 7

Claire did not want revenge in that moment.
She wanted her father alive long enough to answer one question.
Why?
Why had he let her suffer if he knew?
Why correct the lie quietly instead of calling her?
Why leave the truth to be read beside a coffin instead of spoken across a table while he still breathed?
Her hand rested on the polished wood.
The coffin was cold beneath her fingers.
She whispered so softly no one heard, “You should have told me.”
Nathan heard anyway.
Or maybe he only understood.
He adjusted the documents and looked toward the executives seated behind Vanessa.
Several of them had been in the old boardroom.
Several had signed statements.
Several had benefited when Claire disappeared from the foundation.
Now they sat stiffly in funeral black, faces unreadable but eyes alert.
The sealed page had not been read.
The entire inheritance had not been revealed.
Every crime remained unexposed.
But the people who had helped bury Claire’s name were suddenly aware that burial was not permanent.
Vanessa took one step backward.
Her heel touched the chair behind her.
The small sound echoed.
Claire turned toward her sister.
For years, Vanessa had looked at her with victory.
Now she looked at her with fear.
Claire did not smile.

That would have made the moment smaller.
