Chapter 15 - Victoria’s ApologyVictoria wrote her statement by hand.

She refused the public-relations team’s version because it described the wedding assault as “an emotionally driven misunderstanding.”
She had not misunderstood the dress.
She intended to humiliate Claire.
At the gala rehearsal, Victoria stood on the empty stage and read:
“I tore Claire Bennett’s wedding sleeve because I believed social position entitled me to decide who was worthy of my son. The scar did not make Claire worthy. It made my cruelty impossible for me to deny.”
Claire listened from the ballroom floor.
Victoria continued.
“I recognized my missing daughter only after harming a woman who deserved dignity before I knew her blood.”
No request for forgiveness.
No claim of sudden maternal intimacy.
Claire approved the statement.
Lydia watched from the rear.
“You’re giving her a redemption scene.”
“I’m giving her responsibility.”
“Public tears will make people love her.”
“That does not control what I do privately.”
Lydia remained unconvinced.
She had waited a lifetime to see Victoria condemned.
Claire wanted accountability without turning humiliation into another inherited ritual.
The gala drew reporters, donors, investigators, and several Starling survivors.
White roses decorated the ballroom by old tradition.
Claire nearly asked for them removed.
Then she decided flowers did not belong to Margaret.
The event began under federal security.
Victoria spoke first.
Her apology silenced the room.
Claire followed.
She described her adoption, the scar, the bracelet, and the manipulation around the wedding. She did not call Victoria Mom.
She called Grace her mother and Victoria her biological mother.
Both women accepted the distinction.
Ethan revealed his adoption had been converted from temporary guardianship.
Anna displayed the decoy bracelet.
Rebecca spoke from a protected video room.
Lydia took the stage last.
For the first time, the world saw the twins together.
Gasps moved through the ballroom.
Lydia explained that she designed the wedding reveal because private evidence had been buried for decades.
Then Claire interrupted gently.
“You also denied me the choice to expose my own body.”
Lydia turned.
This disagreement had not been planned.
Claire continued.
“Project Starling survives whenever one injured person decides another person’s consent is less important than the goal.”
The room became still.
Lydia’s eyes hardened.
“You would still be hidden without me.”
“Yes.”
“You would still be marrying a man under Margaret’s contract.”
“Possibly.”
“Then admit it worked.”
Claire looked directly at her.
“Something can expose truth and still be wrong.”
The words reached several survivors more deeply than any file.
Margaret appeared on the central screen.
Her face was older than Victoria remembered but unmistakable.
“My daughters and granddaughters have become very skilled at moral performance.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“You stole my children.”
“I preserved the Ashford line from your weakness.”
“You created the weakness.”
Margaret smiled.
She displayed live video from North Haven.
Rows of patient files, cryogenic chambers, and children’s rooms appeared.
“Release every Starling record publicly,” she said, “and these children lose the only identities they know.”
Claire answered.
“We are not releasing them publicly.”
“Then I remain custodian.”
“No.”
Lydia held up the Founder’s Key.
Margaret looked at her with disappointment.
“You were raised better.”
“I was raised useful.”
For one moment, Lydia and Claire stood fully together.
Then the ballroom lights failed.
Emergency lighting activated.
A gunshot struck the screen.
Security moved.
The Founder’s Key vanished from Lydia’s hand.
Eleanor Price ran toward a service exit carrying the pearl purse.
Noah tackled her before she reached the door.
The purse opened.
Inside was not the key.
Only a speaker transmitting Margaret’s voice.
The actual thief had moved elsewhere.
Anna noticed Sophie’s child advocate lying unconscious near the backstage corridor.
Sophie was gone.
A message appeared on the screen.
THE FOUNDER’S KEY FOR THE FOUNDER’S CHILD.
Lydia’s face collapsed.
Margaret had taken the child she raised.
The public alliance shattered into panic.
Claire caught Lydia’s arm before she could run blindly.
“We do this together.”
Lydia looked at her twin.
May you like
For the first time, she did not argue.
👉 The gala united the sisters against Margaret, but Sophie’s abduction turned the Founder’s Key into ransom and threatened to make Lydia abandon every principle she had just accepted.
