“Yes.”

“To protect you from Walter.”
“You raised me to hate Claire.”

“You made me dependent on your version of the world.”

Sophie entered the frame.

“Are you mad at me?”
“No.”
“Grandmother says Claire wants to take Lucy and leave me.”
Claire spoke gently.
“No one is separating you tonight.”
Margaret attempted to end the feed.

“She knows me as her mother.”
Mara answered, “Then help her leave safely.”
Eleanor looked toward Margaret.
For the first time, she chose the child over the system.
She handed Lucy to the advocate.
Margaret activated the ship’s fire suppression system. White gas filled the corridor.
Ethan carried Sophie toward the deck.
Noah helped Eleanor.
Claire and Lydia waited aboard the Coast Guard vessel until both children were confirmed safe.
Margaret escaped through a launch pod with Voss.
The pod disappeared into heavy fog before interception.

No body.
Dr. Voss’s bracelet remained on the seat.
Margaret’s was missing.
Another staged disappearance could not be ruled out.
The analyst also recovered a Starling tablet.
It contained a live account registered to Matron Two.
The current user was Lydia Stone.
Lydia stared at the screen.
“I never opened that.”
The system had designated her Margaret’s successor automatically when the ship was seized.
Even after rejecting sole control, Starling continued treating her as Matron.
Then every file on the tablet began transferring to an unknown server.
The destination belonged to Sophie’s education trust.
