Chapter 16 - The Ransom at North HavenMargaret demanded Lydia come alone.

She promised to return Sophie if Lydia brought Claire’s implant chip and Ethan’s north-star bracelet to a private airfield.

Lydia agreed before Mara finished reading the message.

Claire blocked the door.

“You are not going alone.”

“She has my daughter.”

“She has a child you love. That does not make every demand valid.”

“You can lecture me after seven years of motherhood.”

Claire absorbed the cruelty.

Then answered, “And you can hate me while we still protect her properly.”

Sophie’s advocate had been sedated, not seriously injured. Security footage showed the child following a woman dressed as Lydia.

Project Starling used a physical double.

The woman wore a blonde wig and imitated Lydia’s voice.

Sophie believed she was leaving with her mother.

The abduction exploited trust, not force.

Mara traced the double to an Everwhite? Wrong story. Let's avoid. A private theater company funded by North Haven provided trained impersonators for Starling operations.

The same method may have created the anonymous wedding staff member.

Eleanor Price surrendered after the gala.

She admitted helping Margaret but denied taking Sophie.

Her role was to distract security with the pearl purse.

The real Founder’s Key had been scanned remotely during the blackout.

Margaret might not need the physical object anymore.

The ransom could be designed to gather Claire, Lydia, and Ethan at North Haven.

The three most important living keys.

Claire chose to go under a controlled operation.

Ethan volunteered.

Mara approved only with international law-enforcement support and independent negotiators.

Lydia resented every delay.

Then Sophie sent a hidden voice message through her educational tablet.

“Lydia, the woman here says you chose Claire instead of me.”

Margaret was teaching the child another abandonment story.

The pattern had begun again.

Lydia’s anger became steadier.

“She will not raise Sophie through my fear.”

At the airfield, Claire, Ethan, and Lydia carried inert replicas of the chip and bracelet.

A charter plane transported them to a coastal facility in Maine instead of North Haven. Margaret had created a relay location.

Inside, they found Walter’s leather folder, Eleanor’s legal files, and a video of Sophie.

Margaret spoke through a screen.

“You three were always meant to become one household.”

Ethan looked at the twins.

“Not happening.”

Margaret ignored him.

“The primary heir, mirror heir, and bridge create a stable succession unit.”

Claire answered.

“We are people, not positions.”

“People die. Institutions continue.”

Lydia stepped closer.

“Then why did you spend your life terrified of losing one?”

Margaret’s expression hardened.

The relay facility contained a biometric gate requiring all three to stand before scanners. They refused.

Mara’s team entered through the rear.

The screen switched off.

Sophie was not there.

But a map showed North Haven’s location on an island off the Massachusetts coast.

The island belonged to a medical charity chaired by Margaret Vale.

Federal authorities prepared a warrant.

Then the Ashford board filed an emergency petition preventing entry, claiming the facility contained protected patient identities.

Margaret had tied criminal evidence to legitimate medical privacy.

A court battle could delay rescue for days.

Claire released a limited public statement confirming a child was missing without revealing Sophie’s identity.

Pressure mounted.

Victoria contacted former foundation directors.

Grace contacted child-protection organizations.

Anna organized Starling survivors.

Ethan persuaded Ashford employees to demand an independent search.

Lydia wanted to release the island coordinates publicly.

Claire stopped her.

“Crowds and cameras could endanger Sophie.”

“You still trust systems.”

“I trust distributed pressure more than one impulsive leak.”

Lydia waited.

The court granted limited access.

Before the raid, Margaret sent another message.

A photograph showed Sophie sitting beside a hospital bed.

The patient’s face was hidden.

Sophie held the original bracelet.

The person in the bed wore Charles Ashford’s wedding ring.

Victoria recognized it.

She had buried the ring with her husband.

Either the body in Charles’s grave had been disturbed.

Or Charles Ashford was alive.

👉 The North Haven warrant finally moved forward, but Sophie’s photograph suggested Victoria’s supposedly dead husband had been waiting inside Margaret’s island facility.
