Chapter 17 - The Empty GraveCharles Ashford’s grave was opened under court order.

The coffin contained cremated remains sealed inside a metal urn.

The ashes did not belong to Charles.

They belonged to another man of similar age.

The hospital that treated his fatal stroke had been owned by the Vale Foundation.

Dr. Voss signed the final transfer.

Another death had been manufactured.

Victoria sat inside the mausoleum after investigators left.

Claire remained near the entrance.

“You knew my father lived,” Claire said.

“No.”

“Did you question the private cremation?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I was exhausted.”

The answer resembled every hidden beginning.

Fear, exhaustion, grief, and trust created openings for people who planned carefully.

Victoria looked at the empty space where Charles’s urn had rested.

“I don’t know whether to hope.”

“You don’t have to choose yet.”

Claire heard herself offering the patience others denied her.

North Haven’s raid began before dawn.

Mara led the federal team. Claire, Lydia, Ethan, and Victoria waited aboard a command vessel nearby.

The island clinic appeared abandoned.

Sophie’s room contained toys, books, and recordings of Lydia’s voice.

Margaret had studied the bond she intended to break.

A lower medical wing remained locked.

The Founder’s Key scan opened it remotely when Lydia placed her hand on the command terminal.

Inside were four patients.

Walter had been held there.

Rebecca had once been treated there.

A third bed stood empty.

The fourth held Charles Ashford.

Alive.

He was weak but conscious.

Victoria entered only after doctors stabilized him.

Charles looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

The words were too small for five missing years.

Victoria stood several feet away.

“Did you choose this?”

“At first.”

Charles staged his death after learning Margaret intended to activate Claire and Ethan’s marriage. He believed working from inside North Haven would allow him to destroy Starling.

Margaret discovered him.

For three years, he remained confined and medicated.

“Why not tell me before you disappeared?” Victoria asked.

“I thought you would stop me.”

“You made the choice for me.”

“Yes.”

He did not hide behind sacrifice.

Claire entered.

Charles began crying.

“Amelia.”

“Claire.”

“Yes. Claire.”

He accepted the name immediately.

That did not make him her father emotionally.

He knew.

Charles revealed Sophie was moved from North Haven hours earlier.

Margaret escaped through a submarine-service tunnel with the child and Lydia’s former caregiver.

The photograph had been staged to draw Victoria to the island and expose Charles’s survival.

Margaret wanted the family destabilized before her next move.

The clinic archive contained original Starling fertility records.

Claire’s stolen genetic material created two embryos.

One became Sophie.

The second remained in storage until three years ago.

Then it was transferred.

No birth outcome was recorded.

Another child might exist.

Mara found security footage of Margaret carrying a newborn through the island corridor eighteen months earlier.

The baby wore a double-star bracelet.

Claire felt fear sharpen.

Project Starling had already created Sophie’s possible sibling.

Charles knew about the second transfer.

He tried to stop it.

The gestational carrier disappeared from the clinic before delivery.

Name: Eleanor Price.

The family attorney had not merely handled documents.

She had carried Claire and Ethan’s second biological child.

Eleanor was in custody after the gala.

A medical examination confirmed she had given birth approximately eighteen months earlier.

She refused to identify the child’s location.

Then Mara received a message from the transport team.

Eleanor had escaped during a staged vehicle collision.

Margaret’s network had recovered her.

Lydia stared toward the dark ocean.

“Sophie is not the only child she wants us to chase.”

Claire looked at Charles.

“Why create two?”

He answered.

“One child for Lydia to love.”

“And the other?”

May you like

“For Margaret to raise.”

👉 Charles was found alive and confirmed Sophie had a hidden sibling, while Eleanor’s escape suggested Margaret had raised the second child as her own successor.
