Chapter 10 - THE NAME ABOVE MIKE The microdrive contained the complete ledger.
Officer Brooks opened it only on an isolated police computer while federal financial investigators joined by secure connection.
The files documented seven years of identity fraud, false companies, medical-supply invoices, and accounts created in children’s names.
Mike managed one regional branch.
He did not create the system.
Payments flowed upward to a private holding company named Everstead Family Services.
Its public purpose was to help families manage trusts, emergency custody, and medical expenses. In reality, it harvested identities from vulnerable households.
A parent applying for assistance provided birth certificates, tax records, medical forms, and signatures.
Everstead copied everything.
Mike’s transport company gave him access to families receiving medical equipment. He collected documents under the pretense of delivery confirmation, then opened accounts in their children’s names.
The final beneficiary was a woman named Claire Voss.
The same name Mike used for the substitute.
A photograph appeared inside an encrypted personnel file.
It showed the woman from the vacant apartment.
She was not merely an impersonator.
She directed the network.
Claire trained employees to mimic clients during remote verification, coached them in posture and speech, and maintained physical objects that made the performances convincing.

Claire did not need to resemble someone perfectly. She needed only enough visual details for exhausted clerks and low-resolution cameras to accept the identity.
Her records described Mike as increasingly unstable.

Lily read the entry.
“He was planning to betray Claire too.”
Mike’s private messages proved it.
He wanted to take the reserve fund and disappear with Vanessa—no, there is no Vanessa. Avoid. He wanted to disappear alone after leaving Lily and the children blamed for the fraud.
Claire Voss discovered the plan.
She ordered him to contain his family before the quarterly review.
The overnight abandonment was partly Mike’s escape attempt and partly Claire’s cleanup operation.
Mike believed he could frame Sarah, access the reserve fund, and flee before Claire reacted.
Claire sent the substitute to observe and recover the evidence.

Documents had been prepared to appoint Sarah temporary guardian after Lily’s disappearance.

If Sarah lost custody, the children would enter emergency placement through Everstead.
Claire Voss would control their identities, trusts, and testimony.
The children were never meant to remain with Mike.

Lily gripped the hospital blanket.
“Emily and Jack were supposed to disappear into the system.”
Brooks nodded.
“That may still be Claire’s goal.”
A message appeared on the isolated computer.
The machine had no internet connection.

Technicians pulled the power cable.
The message remained on-screen through the battery backup.
A second sentence appeared.
MIKE WILL COME FOR HIS CHILDREN BEFORE MIDNIGHT.
Police searched every floor of the hospital.
Mike was not found.
But a nurse discovered a hospital transporter’s uniform missing from the laundry room.
Security footage showed a man wearing it entering the pediatric elevator.
His face was hidden.
