Chapter 3 - THE VIDEO MIKE SENT Officer Brooks instructed Sarah to keep Mike talking.

“Where is Lily?” Sarah asked.
“I don’t know.”
“You drove her here.”
“No. I drove the children because she abandoned them in the parking garage.”
The lie came without hesitation.
Mike claimed Lily called him at 4:00 a.m. and demanded that he collect Emily and Jack from a shopping-center parking lot. She allegedly gave him the purple backpack and ordered him to leave the children with Sarah.
“Why didn’t you call police?”
“Because she said she would kill herself.”
Emily looked up at the word.
Sarah moved into the kitchen so the child would not hear more.
Mike continued.
“She’s been unstable for months. Ask her therapist.”
“Lily doesn’t have a therapist.”
“She hid it from you.”
A video arrived during the call.
Lily sat inside the passenger seat of Mike’s car, speaking directly toward the camera.
“I am leaving voluntarily. Sarah agreed to care for the children. Mike did not hurt me.”
She looked exhausted but uninjured.
Her words were clear.
Officer Brooks watched the clip twice.
“Can this prove she left willingly?” Sarah asked.
“Not by itself.”
Emily entered the kitchen carrying her blanket.
“Mommy had to say those words.”
Sarah knelt.
“How do you know?”
“Daddy squeezed her hand under the blanket.”
“Did she tell you that?”
Emily shook her head.
“I saw.”
The child demonstrated by gripping her own fingers until the knuckles whitened.
Officer Brooks asked whether Mike had held anything else.
“A little black thing,” Emily said. “Mommy looked at it.”
A weapon.
Or something he wanted her to believe was one.
Mike demanded to speak with Officer Brooks. She identified herself but offered no information beyond confirming that the children were safe.
“You need to arrest Sarah,” he said.
“For what?”
“Helping Lily abduct my children and steal company money.”
“You delivered the children.”
“Because Lily ordered me to.”
“You were recorded carrying them.”
“I’m not denying it.”
Mike sounded prepared for every question.
He said the $416,000 transfer came from a business account he and Lily shared. He accused Sarah of coordinating the theft.
Officer Brooks checked the transfer metadata.
The authorization originated from Lily’s phone at 5:58 a.m.—more than an hour after Mike left the children at Sarah’s door.
“Lily’s phone is active,” Brooks said.
Sarah looked toward her sister’s old device in the backpack.
It was not the phone used for the transfer.
Mike heard the exchange through the speaker.
“She has another phone,” he said quickly. “She always planned this.”
“Then give us its number.”
“I don’t know it.”
The call ended.
Police requested an emergency trace on Lily’s primary phone. Its last registered location was an industrial district near the river.
Officer Brooks inspected the documents in the backpack.
The birth-certificate copies were genuine. The temporary-care letter naming Sarah as guardian appeared notarized and dated the previous afternoon.
Lily’s signature looked real.
A second document authorized Sarah to seek medical treatment for both children.
“Your sister prepared this,” Brooks said.
“She knew she might not come back tonight.”
Beneath the medicine, Sarah found a folded receipt from a twenty-four-hour gas station. The purchase included water, children’s crackers, and a disposable phone.
Time: 3:46 a.m.
Emily recognized the logo.
“Mommy went inside.”
“Was Daddy with her?”
“No. He said he was watching us.”
“Did she come back?”
Emily nodded.
“She gave Jack the dinosaur.”
That brief stop might have been Lily’s only unsupervised moment.
She bought the disposable phone, hid the memory card, and perhaps made the transfer.
Sarah checked the clear plastic sleeve that had protected the phone.
A thin blue thread ran along one edge.
Lily’s recorded message had warned about a blue stamp, but no blue stamp appeared on any visible document.
Sarah pressed the seam.
Something stiff was hidden inside the plastic.
Officer Brooks cut it open.
A narrow paper strip slid onto the table.
It contained a storage-unit number, an access code, and four words in Lily’s handwriting:

HE WILL TAKE ME THERE.
👉 Lily had predicted where Mike would imprison her, but the location was already more than an hour old.
