Chapter 11 - THE ELEVATOR STOPPED BETWEEN FLOORS The pediatric elevator stopped between the fourth and fifth floors.

Security disabled every exit while officers entered the shaft from above.
The transporter’s uniform lay inside the empty car.
So did the purple backpack.
Mike had removed a ceiling panel and climbed into the maintenance passage.
The backpack contained no money or documents.
Only a phone.
It began ringing when Officer Brooks approached.
Mike spoke through the speaker.
“Put Lily on.”
“No.”
“Then I stop telling you where the device is.”
“What device?”
“The one beneath Jack’s hospital bed.”
The room was evacuated immediately.
Bomb technicians found a small electronic unit taped beneath the frame. It was not explosive. It emitted a signal capable of unlocking nearby electronic doors and disrupting security cameras.
Mike had been creating blind spots inside the hospital.
“Why warn us?” Brooks asked.
“Because Claire installed it, not me.”
“You carried the backpack.”
“She told me it held access codes.”
“You’re still following her instructions?”
“I’m trying to survive them.”
Mike claimed Claire had threatened to release evidence making him responsible for every Everstead account unless he recovered the microdrive.
She also threatened the children.
Officer Brooks’s voice hardened.
“You already threatened them.”
“I never intended to hurt Emily or Jack.”
“You left them outside in freezing weather.”
“I watched from the vacant unit until Sarah came.”
“You drugged their mother.”
“Claire provided the dose.”
“You tied her to a chair.”
Mike stopped answering.
Like every person who called himself manipulated, he drew the line exactly after his own choices.
He offered an exchange.
The microdrive for the location of Everstead’s identity archive, where records of hundreds of children remained active.
Brooks refused to surrender the original but agreed to continue speaking.
Mike directed her to a locker inside the hospital chapel.
Officers found a key card, a map, and photographs of Claire Voss entering a suburban house outside Columbus.
Lily recognized the property.
It belonged to Mike’s late father and had been empty for years.
Mike said Claire used it as a temporary identity studio.
“She’ll destroy everything tonight.”
“Where are you?”
“Closer than you think.”
The line went silent.
A fire alarm activated on the second floor.
Patients and staff moved toward emergency exits despite police efforts to control them. The crowd created the confusion Mike needed.
Sarah remained with Emily and Jack inside a secured family room. Lily had been moved to another ward for treatment.
The overhead lights flickered.
The door unlocked.
A man in hospital scrubs entered.
Sarah recognized Mike despite the mask.
He closed the door behind him.
Emily pulled Jack against the wall.
Mike held up both hands.
“I’m not here to take them.”
“Stay away.”
“Claire has Lily.”
Sarah’s heart stopped.
“She is under police guard.”
“Not anymore.”
Mike showed Sarah a live video.
Lily lay inside a moving vehicle, unconscious again. A woman wearing a nurse’s uniform drove.
The substitute.
Claire Voss had used Mike’s security disruption to remove Lily while everyone searched for him.
“You helped her,” Sarah said.
“I thought she was going for the drive.”
“What do you want?”
“The microdrive.”
“Police have it.”
Mike looked toward Emily.
“No. They have the copy.”
Emily clutched the pink blanket.
Sarah understood.
Lily had made more than one decoy.
The drive police opened might expose the network, but Claire believed the child still carried something more valuable.
Mike stepped closer.
“Emily, what did your mother hide?”
The girl said nothing.
Heavy footsteps approached outside.
Mike reached for the door.
Before leaving, he looked at Sarah.
“Claire doesn’t need the ledger. She needs the recording Lily made of the first person who taught her how Everstead works.”
“Who was it?”
Mike’s expression changed.
“You.”
May you like
Then he disappeared into the emergency crowd.
👉 Mike claimed Sarah’s own voice appeared on the recording that could destroy Everstead.
