Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN IN THE GARAGE Sarah was taken to the police station for a formal interview.
She understood why.
Her name appeared on accounts moving millions. Her apartment contained marked cash, forged documents, and the children of a missing woman. Lily had transferred money to her without permission.
The truth looked almost identical to complicity.
Emily and Jack remained nearby with a child specialist. Sarah refused to let them be taken somewhere unfamiliar.
Officer Brooks sat across from her.
“I believe you did not knowingly participate.”
“That doesn’t sound comforting.”
“It isn’t meant to be. Belief is not evidence.”
Sarah handed over every device, password, and financial record she possessed.
The fraudulent accounts were created using her Social Security number, a copied driver’s license, and video verification.
The verification footage showed Sarah’s face.
She sat at her kitchen table and confirmed an account opening.
Sarah had never recorded it.
Forensic analysts discovered the image came from building-camera footage and social-media videos. Her voice had been assembled from calls with Lily.
Mike’s network had constructed a convincing version of her.
One detail distinguished the fake.
The woman in the video wore a small silver necklace.
Sarah had lost that necklace eight months earlier during a family dinner at Lily’s house.
Emily remembered finding it beneath the couch and giving it to her mother.
Lily never returned it.
“Why would Lily keep it?” Brooks asked.
Sarah did not know.
The evidence drive from Mike’s office contained a still image from the parking-garage meeting. The unidentified woman’s hand rested beside a folder.
She wore Sarah’s necklace.
Someone had used it to strengthen the visual impersonation.
Officer Brooks enhanced the reflection in a car window.
The woman’s face emerged in fragments.
Sarah stared.
“That’s Lily.”
Brooks enlarged it.
The hair, jaw, and posture resembled her sister.
The meeting occurred nine months earlier—before Lily claimed to know anything about Mike’s scheme.
In the recording, Mike said she had accessed the office. The woman answered that Lily’s access should be removed.
Was Lily speaking about herself in the third person?
Or had someone been made to resemble her?
Officer Brooks avoided assumptions.
She showed the image to Emily.
The child studied it.
“That’s Mommy’s coat.”
“Is it Mommy?”
Emily leaned closer.
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“Mommy has a little moon by her ear.”
Lily had a crescent-shaped birthmark beneath her left ear.
The woman in the garage did not.
The image showed someone impersonating Lily while wearing Sarah’s necklace.
The operation used copied identities not only online but in person.
Mike’s accomplice could pass as Lily in poor lighting, sign documents, appear on cameras, and establish timelines.
That explained why the building footage never clearly showed Lily inside the car.
It also explained the voluntary statement video.
The woman might not have been Lily at all.
Sarah remembered Emily saying Mike squeezed Mommy’s hand beneath the blanket. Perhaps the child had seen Lily record another video. The clip Mike sent could still show the impersonator.
Officer Brooks contacted the forensic team.
Facial analysis detected differences around the eyes and ears.
The woman in Mike’s video was not Lily.
Mike had created evidence of voluntary abandonment before kidnapping her.
The station received a new message from Lily’s phone.
A photograph showed her bound inside a dark room. A newspaper lay against her chest to prove the time.
Mike’s text read:
Withdraw the fraud complaint and transfer the children to me.
Sarah looked toward Brooks.
“He thinks I control that.”
“He knows you don’t.”
“Then what does he really want?”
A second photograph arrived.
It showed Emily and Jack inside the police station, taken through a window minutes earlier.
