The Very Long Sleepover / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - THE LOCKER BENEATH THE OFFICE Mike’s company operated from a renovated warehouse near the freight tracks.

He had told Sarah he managed transport contracts for medical suppliers. Lily rarely discussed the business. Whenever Sarah asked, she said only that Mike worked too much and came home angry.

The brass key opened a locker in the basement beneath his office.

Police entered under an emergency warrant.

Inside were accounting ledgers, prepaid phones, forged identification cards, and boxes of financial records tied to accounts opened in the names of children.

Not only Emily and Jack.

Dozens of children.

Some names belonged to families Mike’s company transported medical equipment for. Others appeared in publicly available school and insurance databases.

Officer Brooks photographed everything.

Mike used minors’ identities to create temporary accounts, move money, and close the accounts before parents received notices. Because children rarely had active credit histories, the fraud often remained invisible.

Lily discovered the scheme while applying for a school account for Emily.

Her daughter’s identity had already been used for three companies and a loan exceeding two hundred thousand dollars.

Jack’s name appeared on a shipping contract dated before his birth.

Sarah stared at the documents on the video feed.

“He planned this before Jack existed.”

Brooks opened a steel cashbox.

Inside were voice recordings of Lily reading numbers and authorization phrases. Some came from ordinary family videos. Others had been recorded secretly during conversations.

Mike had assembled enough material to generate financial approvals in her voice.

The $416,000 transfer might have been scheduled by Lily, as she claimed.

Other transfers bearing her authorization were almost certainly fabricated.

A ledger showed where the money went.

Most passed into a private debt fund.

The final beneficiary was concealed behind numbered accounts.

Mike did not appear to be the sole owner of the operation. He paid someone above him.

One note read:

Family liability must be contained before quarterly review.

Lily and the children had become liabilities.

Police found her original evidence drive taped beneath the bottom drawer. It contained account lists, hidden recordings, and photographs of Mike meeting unidentified people.

The footage showed him speaking with a woman in a parking garage. Her face remained outside the camera angle.

“You promised Lily would never understand the accounts,” the woman said.

“She got into the office.”

“Then remove her access.”

“What about the children?”

“Use Sarah. She already has the correct address, clean credit, and no husband.”

Sarah felt cold.

Someone had selected her as the perfect person to frame long before the children appeared on her mat.

Single.

Financially stable.

No criminal record.

Close enough to Lily to seem loyal.

Independent enough to appear capable of funding an escape.

Mike had not chosen Sarah impulsively.

The plan had been designed around her life.

Police traced the van to traffic footage near an abandoned riverside freight depot. Officers surrounded the property but found only another decoy.

A chair.

Plastic restraints.

Lily’s scarf.

A speaker playing recorded train sounds.

Mike had used the voicemail’s background deliberately.

He knew police were listening.

Sarah’s phone rang again.

Unknown number.

Mike spoke before she could answer.

“You found the basement.”

“Where is Lily?”

“You should be more worried about yourself.”

“You left your children outside in the cold.”

“They were never in danger.”

“Jack was dehydrated. Emily thought her mother was dead.”

Mike’s breathing sharpened.

“Lily created this. She moved money that doesn’t belong to us.”

“She was stopping you.”

“She signed your name to the transfer.”

“She told me.”

“Did she tell you what happens when the people who own that money learn you have it?”

Sarah glanced at Officer Brooks’s live image.

“Police have the cash.”

“The cash is nothing. Look at your own accounts.”

Sarah opened her banking application.

Three business accounts had appeared under her name overnight.

Each contained transfers tied to Mike’s network.

Total balance: more than six million dollars.

The accounts had been created months earlier.

Mike lowered his voice.

“You were part of this long before Lily decided to run.”

👉 Mike had framed Sarah over months, not hours—and millions of stolen dollars were already attached to her identity.
