The Very Long Sleepover / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - THE APARTMENT BESIDE THE CANAL Police entered the apartment through the rear balcony.

Lily lay on the bedroom floor with her wrists bound and tape across her mouth. She was dehydrated, bruised, and barely conscious—but alive.

The person who had stolen the note escaped through a maintenance passage before officers reached the unit.

Mike was not there.

Lily had been left alone except for a speaker through which he issued instructions.

Paramedics transported her to the hospital under guard.

Sarah brought Emily and Jack only after doctors confirmed Lily could see them.

Emily ran first.

Lily began crying before her daughter reached the bed.

“You came back,” Emily whispered.

“I tried.”

“You said it was a long sleepover.”

“I’m sorry it was so long.”

Jack climbed carefully onto the mattress and placed the plastic dinosaur beside his mother.

For several minutes, no one discussed money, recordings, or Mike.

They simply remained together.

Later, Officer Brooks questioned Lily gently.

Mike had discovered her evidence the previous afternoon. He forced her to record multiple statements, then drugged her during the drive.

At the gas station, she bought the disposable phone and crackers while Mike waited with the children. She hid instructions inside whatever objects she could reach.

After taking her to Unit 317, Mike changed her clothes, arranged the coat inside the car, and recorded the false abandonment video using the substitute.

“He needed me alive long enough to unlock the final account,” Lily said.

“What final account?” Brooks asked.

“A reserve fund. I don’t know who controls it.”

“Why transfer $416,000 to Sarah?”

“To freeze the account.”

Lily had discovered that any transfer above four hundred thousand dollars to a new recipient triggered an automatic compliance review. She chose Sarah because her account was clean and because police would immediately investigate once Mike accused her.

“You intentionally made me look involved,” Sarah said.

Lily’s eyes filled.

“I made you impossible to ignore.”

“That could have sent me to prison.”

“I know.”

“You left your children outside my door.”

“Mike chose the timing. I only changed what was in the backpack.”

Sarah wanted to embrace her sister and scream at her simultaneously.

Lily had acted under terror.

She had also made decisions for everyone around her.

“I needed someone Mike couldn’t frighten into silence,” Lily said.

“You never gave me the choice.”

“No.”

The honesty did not heal it.

Lily described the substitute as a woman close to her height, skilled with makeup, voice imitation, and legal documents. She never saw the woman clearly.

Mike called her Claire.

Sarah did not recognize the name.

Officer Brooks checked fraud databases. Several identity-manipulation cases involved a consultant named Claire Voss, but no confirmed photograph existed.

The name might be another alias.

Mike remained missing.

He sent no messages after Lily’s rescue.

That frightened Brooks.

“He expected us to find the apartment eventually,” she said. “The note trap may have worked because he allowed it.”

Lily agreed.

The room contained no financial records, fingerprints, or personal objects. It was disposable.

Mike had lost his hostage but kept his network.

That evening, Sarah returned to her apartment briefly under police escort to collect clothes for the children.

The hallway appeared exactly as it had before dawn.

The welcome mat had been placed back in position.

Sarah knew police had removed it as evidence.

A new folded note waited beneath it.

This handwriting did not belong to Lily.

You were supposed to keep the children inside.

Officer Brooks searched the apartment.

No intruder remained.

The building camera showed no one approaching Sarah’s door after police cleared the scene.

Yet the note was fresh.

Someone had entered through a path the camera could not see.

👉 Lily had been rescued, but Mike’s network had already returned to Sarah’s apartment without appearing on any building footage.
