Chapter 1 - THE POUNDING ABOVE THE WEDDING RIBBONSGrant Mercer returned from the airport expecting to find a ruined wedding reception.

White ribbons still hung from the living-room archway. Crushed flowers covered the carpet. Half-empty champagne glasses crowded the mantel. Instead of music, the house echoed with accusations.
His twelve-year-old daughter stood against the staircase.
Ava’s knuckles were bruised and wrapped in gauze. Her dark formal dress was torn at one shoulder. Six furious relatives surrounded her as though she were a dangerous stranger.
Across the room, Wade Holloway sat beneath the wedding decorations with bandages around his head and ribs. His new wife, Diane—Grant’s younger sister—pointed at Ava.
“Your daughter beat my husband unconscious—we’re pressing charges!”
Grant placed himself between Ava and the adults.
He had spent fourteen hours traveling home from a military-security assignment in Germany. He was exhausted, still wearing travel clothes, but one look at Ava’s face burned through the fatigue.
She was frightened.
Not guilty.
Grant knelt at her eye level.
“Ava, look at me and tell me exactly what happened.”
Wade leaned forward.
“She attacked me during my own wedding.”
Grant ignored him.
Ava unlocked her smartphone. She opened a folder hidden behind a calculator application and showed her father three photographs.
The first showed an exterior bolt attached to a child’s bedroom door.
The second showed a small wrist covered in finger-shaped bruises.
The third showed red welts crossing a child’s back.
Ava’s voice shook.
“He locked Tommy inside and called it discipline.”
The relatives recoiled.
Diane stepped toward the phone.
“Those pictures prove nothing.”
Wade lunged from the sofa, reaching for the device. Grant struck his hand aside so violently that Wade stumbled into a table.
“That’s out of context—the boy is clumsy!” Wade shouted.
Ava pointed toward the staircase.
The room fell silent.
A faint pounding came from upstairs.
Three weak strikes.
A pause.
Then three more.
Grant looked at Diane.
“Where is Tommy?”
Her lips parted, but no answer came.
Ava moved first. She grabbed the lapel of Wade’s jacket and pulled a small brass key from his inner pocket.
“I hit him because Tommy is still upstairs.”
Grant seized the key.
He and Ava raced up the staircase while Wade shouted for them to stop. At the end of the upstairs hallway stood a bedroom door secured with a steel padlock and an exterior sliding bolt.
Grant inserted the key.
Wade tackled him from behind.
They crashed into the wall. Grant twisted free, drove Wade to the floor, and shouted for Ava to open the door.
Her hands trembled over the bolt.
The instant she pulled it back, a tiny bloodied hand appeared through the gap.
“Tommy!” Diane screamed from the stairs.
Grant forced the door wider.
The room beyond was dark.
Tommy lay curled near the threshold, barely conscious. But the whisper that emerged from farther inside did not belong to a seven-year-old child.
“Raven Six…”
Grant froze.
That had been his military call sign.
No one in his family knew it.
A shadow moved inside the locked closet behind Tommy.

Then someone pulled the closet door shut from within.
👉 Tommy was not the only person Wade had locked upstairs—and the second captive knew Grant’s classified military identity.
