Chapter 4 - THE STORY DIANE REFUSED TO SEEDiane asked to speak with Grant without police present.
He refused.
Detective Ortiz remained near the hospital door while Diane explained how Wade’s discipline began.
At first, he used ordinary punishments. No television. Earlier bedtime. Additional chores.
Then he installed a lock high on Tommy’s bedroom door.
“He said Tommy sleepwalked,” Diane whispered.
“Did he?”
“Once or twice.”
“Before Wade moved in?”
“No.”
Wade began giving Tommy “night vitamins” supplied by Dr. Rusk. The boy became confused, wandered, and sometimes woke in places he did not remember entering.
Wade used the drug’s effects as proof that Tommy needed confinement.
“You watched the problem appear after the medicine,” Grant said.
“I trusted my husband.”
“You trusted the adult who made your child afraid to sleep.”
Diane covered her face.
She had found bruises, but Wade explained each one. Tommy fell from his bicycle. Tommy fought at school. Tommy struck himself during nightmares.
Diane accepted the explanations because questioning them threatened the marriage she wanted.
“I thought Tommy resented him,” she said.
“He was warning you.”
“Yes.”
She did not ask Grant to excuse her.
At the police station, Wade claimed Ava fabricated the evidence because she hated him. He described the locked room as a safe space for a troubled child.
When Ortiz played Tommy’s whispered statement, Wade’s confidence weakened.
“He opens doors he shouldn’t.”
“What door?” Ortiz asked.
Wade requested an attorney.
Grant reviewed his former Blackridge mission files. Six years earlier, his team had been assigned to retrieve a defecting chemical engineer from a covert facility in Romania.
The operation failed.
An explosion destroyed the extraction site. Noah Briggs and two contractors disappeared. Blackridge declared them dead.
Grant had always believed someone leaked their route.
Now Wade’s financial records showed he received a large payment three days after the failed mission.
He had not been part of Grant’s team.
He had worked in Blackridge communications.
Wade knew the route.
Dr. Rusk signed the medical death declarations.
Everett’s construction company later renovated several Blackridge safe houses.
The family was tied to every stage of the cover-up.
Ava returned Grant’s phone after scanning one of Wade’s hidden documents.
A list of code names appeared.
Asset A: Dr. Emil Varga.
Asset B: Sgt. Noah Briggs.
Dependent T: Tommy Holloway.
Observer A: Ava Mercer.
Grant stopped at the last line.
Ava was not simply a witness who discovered the room.
Blackridge had already classified her.
The document contained photographs of her leaving school, visiting Grant’s apartment, and practicing soccer.
One picture had been taken through her bedroom window.
Grant called Ortiz.
“Move Ava into protective custody now.”
The detective entered the hospital corridor.
Ava’s chair was empty.
Her phone lay beneath it.
The security camera showed a nurse leading her toward the elevator. The woman wore hospital scrubs and carried a badge.
The real nurse assigned to that floor was standing inside Tommy’s room.
The impostor had removed Ava nine minutes earlier.
Then Grant’s phone vibrated.
A message from Wade’s number appeared:
May you like
Trade Asset B for Observer A. Come without police, Raven Six.
👉 Ava had exposed the locked room, and now the same organization had taken her to force Grant into silence.
