Chapter 5 - THE GIRL WHO LEFT A TRAILGrant wanted to run from the hospital immediately.

Ortiz stopped him.
“Your daughter anticipated this.”
She held up Ava’s smartphone.
Before following the false nurse, Ava activated a family safety application Grant had installed years earlier. The phone remained behind, but her smartwatch transmitted location bursts every sixty seconds.
The signal moved west toward an industrial district.
Ava had also uploaded a photograph before entering the elevator.
It showed the impostor’s left wrist.
A small Blackridge insignia had been tattooed beneath her sleeve.
Grant recognized the woman as Fiona Rusk, the doctor’s daughter and a former combat medic attached to his Romania operation.
Fiona had been listed among the dead.
Another corpse without independent identification.
The trail ended at Everett’s construction warehouse.
Police surrounded the building quietly.
Grant entered with Ortiz through a rear service door. Wedding decorations were stacked near the entrance—white ribbons, flower arches, unused table linens.
The wedding company had been a Blackridge shell vendor.
In the warehouse office, they found Ava’s shoes and a broken plastic restraint.
She had not gone quietly.
A blood smear led toward a freight elevator.
The underground level contained three hidden rooms identical to Tommy’s.
One held medical equipment.
One contained surveillance files.
The third was open.
Ava had escaped.
She left arrows scratched into the dust with a metal hairpin.
Grant followed them into a utility tunnel.
At the far end, he heard his daughter’s voice.
“Dad, stop!”
Ava stood twenty feet away with Fiona’s arm around her neck. A syringe pressed against her shoulder.
Behind them sat a gaunt man with a scarred face and two missing fingers.
Noah Briggs.
Alive.
“No police,” Fiona warned.
Ortiz remained hidden behind the tunnel corner.
Grant raised his hands.
“Let Ava go.”
“Noah first.”
“What have you done to him?”
“Kept him alive after your government abandoned him.”
Noah lifted his head.
His eyes focused on Grant.
“Raven Six.”
Grant stepped closer.
Noah shook his head violently.
“Don’t believe her.”
Fiona claimed Noah possessed evidence that Blackridge had sold classified chemical research to foreign buyers. Wade was holding him until the company completed a final sale.
Tommy discovered Noah during one of his drug-induced nighttime episodes.
The child began bringing him food.
Wade responded by locking them both inside connected rooms.
“Why take Ava?” Grant asked.
“She photographed the bolt. Once police traced the room, every safe house became vulnerable.”
“You could have run.”
“We need the archive Noah hid.”
Fiona believed Grant knew the location.
He did not.
Noah whispered:
“Ava does.”
Everyone turned toward the girl.
Ava’s eyes widened.
Before Wade attacked her, Tommy had pushed a child’s bedroom key into the lining of her phone case. Ava assumed it opened the locked room.
It opened a different door.
Noah had given it to Tommy and told him to trust only the girl who fought back.
Ava pulled the key from her sleeve.
Fiona tightened her grip.
“Give it to me.”
Ava threw it toward an open drainage pipe.
Fiona lunged.
Grant charged.
Ortiz emerged with her weapon raised.
The tunnel lights went out before anyone reached Ava.
A gunshot echoed.
When emergency lights activated, Fiona was gone.
Ava was alive.
Noah’s chair was empty.
The key had disappeared from the drain.
On the wall, Noah had written with blood:

RUSK HAS TOMMY.
👉 The rescue saved Ava, but Dr. Rusk had entered the hospital while everyone followed her signal.
