Chapter 8 - THE THIRD OPTIONGrant refused both choices.

He ordered Fiona to disconnect the terminal from the public network before opening the dependent files.
“The system is mirrored,” she said.
“Then isolate the medical index from the research archive.”
“It was designed to prevent that.”
“Every system is designed by people. People leave mistakes.”
Noah remembered Varga building an emergency partition into the Romania files. The scientist feared Blackridge would use the children as leverage against him.
The access phrase was hidden inside an old military challenge code.
Grant entered his call sign.
RAVEN SIX.
The system requested a second identity.
Noah entered:
BRIGGS THREE.
A third field appeared:
WITNESS ZERO.
Only Dr. Emil Varga could complete it.
Blackridge records said Varga died eighteen months earlier inside a Philadelphia psychiatric hospital.
Noah laughed bitterly.
“Then he’s probably alive.”
Tommy tugged Ava’s sleeve.
“The man in the wall said Zero was downstairs.”
Everyone turned toward him.
Wade had used “downstairs” to describe the sealed basement beneath Diane’s house.
Police had searched the bedroom, attic, and service passage.
They had not found a basement entrance.
Everett’s construction plans showed none.
Grant remembered the exterior bolt photograph. Behind the doorframe, another piece of metal appeared—part of a vertical locking system extending through the floor.
The bedroom had been built over an elevator.
Teams returned to the suburban house.
Beneath Tommy’s carpet, they found a concealed platform descending into a medical bunker.
Dr. Emil Varga lay inside under continuous sedation.
He had been beneath the wedding guests the entire day.
Wade kept Noah upstairs and Varga below, using Tommy’s room as the only access point to both captives.
The child was not confined merely as punishment.
He guarded the entrance without understanding it.
Doctors stabilized Varga long enough for him to speak.
Grant held the terminal tablet near his bed.
“Witness Zero,” Varga whispered.
The archive separated.
Dependent identities moved into an encrypted evidence package accessible to federal child-protection teams. The nerve-agent formula remained sealed behind Varga’s biometric authorization.
Blackridge’s immediate leverage collapsed.
Police warrants spread across six states.
Homes, clinics, and warehouses connected to the hidden-room network were raided.
Several children and adult witnesses were found alive.
But Everett, Wade, Rusk, and Fiona escaped the freight terminal during the confusion.
Fiona left with a copy of the official ledger.
Noah believed she intended to expose corrupt officials outside ordinary channels.
Ortiz believed she might sell it.
Diane faced arrest for child neglect and obstruction. She was allowed one supervised hospital visit with Tommy.
She knelt several feet from him.
“I should have believed you.”
Tommy held Ava’s hand.
“You believed Wade.”
“Yes.”
“More than me.”
Diane began crying.
“Yes.”
Tommy did not move toward her.
He was seven, but he understood that apologies could not unlock all doors immediately.
Grant reviewed the recovered wedding footage once more.
At 9:16 that morning, before guests arrived, a man entered through the upstairs hallway.
He wore Grant’s travel jacket.
His face remained hidden.
He opened the child’s bedroom with a military key and spoke to Noah through the wall.
“Raven Six lands tonight. Make him believe Wade built this alone.”
Noah watched the recording.
“That voice isn’t Wade’s.”
Grant recognized it.
It belonged to Colonel Stephen Mercer.
His father.
