Chapter 10 - THE CHILD BEHIND THE LAST DOORWade drove Ava toward Philadelphia.

Stephen claimed he did not authorize the kidnapping.

Grant did not believe him.

“You trained people to turn children into leverage. You don’t get to act surprised when they follow the lesson.”

Stephen ended the call.

Fiona activated the ledger’s tracking function. Ava’s hidden key emitted a signal from inside Wade’s vehicle.

The route led back toward Diane’s suburban house.

Police had released the property after removing Varga from the bunker.

No one expected Blackridge to return to an exposed location.

That was why Wade chose it.

Grant, Ortiz, Noah, and tactical officers arrived as Wade dragged Ava through the living room. White wedding ribbons still hung from the walls.

The house looked almost untouched.

Ava fought him at the staircase.

She drove her elbow into his injured ribs and broke free long enough to shout:

“He needs the key for the last room!”

Wade seized her hair.

Grant struck him from the side.

They crashed beneath the wedding photographs. Wade reached for a pistol, but Ava kicked it under the sofa.

Ortiz arrested him while Grant pulled his daughter close.

“Are you hurt?”

“I’m okay.”

“You keep saying that when you are not.”

Ava’s eyes filled.

“I knew you’d come.”

The bedroom upstairs remained open.

The bolt had been removed.

Tommy’s bed was gone.

But Ava’s brass key fit a second lock hidden behind the closet wall.

Grant turned it.

A steel panel slid aside, revealing a narrow staircase descending beneath the house—deeper than Varga’s medical bunker.

At the bottom stood a final door.

Noah recognized the military seal.

“This isn’t Blackridge.”

The insignia belonged to a classified Army unit dissolved before Grant enlisted.

Stephen Mercer’s unit.

Ava raised her phone and activated its light.

Names had been carved into the walls.

Missing soldiers.

Doctors.

Children.

At the final door, one name appeared repeatedly:

GRANT MERCER.

Beside it was a date from thirty years earlier.

The year Grant was told his father died.

Ortiz opened the dependent archive on her tablet. A hidden family record appeared.

Raven Program—Subject Six.

Grant’s childhood photograph filled the screen.

He was eight years old, seated inside the same underground room.

He remembered none of it.

A second child sat beside him.

Same age.

Same face.

A twin brother Grant had never known existed.

Ava touched the final door.

Someone knocked from inside.

Three strikes.

A pause.

Three more.

The pattern Tommy used upstairs.

Grant raised his weapon.

“Who’s in there?”

A boy’s voice answered.

Not an adult.

Not Tommy.

“Raven Six?”

Grant felt Ava grip his sleeve.

The voice continued.

“Dad said you would come when the wedding failed.”

The door’s electronic panel activated.

A live image showed Stephen Mercer standing behind a child who looked exactly like Grant had at twelve.

Stephen rested one hand on the boy’s shoulder.

“You saved Ava,” he said through the speaker. “Now decide whether you want to save your son.”

Grant stared at the child.

“I don’t have a son.”

Stephen smiled.

“That is what Diane was told about Tommy.”

Behind Grant, Wade began laughing from the officers’ custody.

Ava looked toward the old wedding ribbons moving in the draft.

Then she whispered:

“Dad… someone just locked the door above us.”

The underground lights shut off.

In the darkness, dozens of children began pounding from behind the walls.
