Chapter 2

Vanessa Vale had planned the humiliation carefully.

Not loudly.

Not crudely.

Expensively.

The oceanfront beach club had been rented for the evening under the excuse of a charity reception. Champagne flowed near the pool. Palm trees swayed against the sunset. Wealthy guests posed beside crystal tables and smiled for photographs they would pretend were spontaneous.

Elena had been invited last.

Almost as an afterthought.

Daniel sent the message himself.

Vanessa wants to clear the air. Come tonight. Please.

Elena knew better.

Vanessa never cleared air.

She poisoned it and then blamed other people for coughing.

Still, Elena came.

She wore the dark-green outfit because she had stopped hiding the scar years ago.

The bullet had entered during a financial-crimes operation that was never fully explained to the public. The official version called it an injury during service. The private version lived with fewer people.

Chief Hayes knew.

A few officers knew.

Elena knew what she had lost.

Vanessa only knew there was a scar she could use.

When Elena entered the poolside party, Vanessa greeted her with a smile and a screen already waiting inside the glass pavilion.

A screen full of carefully arranged records.

Accusations.

Dates.

False transfers.

A fake criminal history polished enough to fool guests who wanted scandal more than truth.

Elena watched the crowd turn.

Then she saw Chief Hayes arrive.

And she let the lie reach its loudest point before answering.
