Chapter 4

Vanessa tried to recover with volume.
“Detective? She is the criminal!”
Her voice cracked on the last word.
Elena heard it.
So did Chief Hayes.
So did half the guests who had laughed minutes earlier.
A confident liar attacks.
A frightened liar repeats.
Vanessa pointed again toward Elena’s scar as though the old wound itself were evidence.
“Ask her why she left the department.”
Chief Hayes’s expression hardened.
Elena took one step forward.
Not toward the Chief.
Toward Vanessa.
She did not cover the scar.
Did not pull her hair over her shoulder.
Did not shrink.
“You forged those records and displayed them for every witness.”
The guests shifted.
Phones lowered.
Cocktail glasses froze halfway to lips.
Vanessa’s grip tightened around her glass.
“You can’t prove that.”
Elena’s eyes stayed on her.
“I didn’t say I came alone.”
That was when two uniformed officers became visible near the glass pavilion doors.
They did not arrest anyone.
They did not touch Vanessa.
They simply stood there, calm and present.
Vanessa looked toward the entrance.
Too quickly.
Elena noticed.
Chief Hayes noticed.
Daniel noticed.
The exit had become more interesting to Vanessa than the accusation she had built.
