Chapter 9

Vanessa tried to leave.

Not obviously.

She took one step toward the pavilion, pretending to set down her cocktail.

Elena noticed.

Chief Hayes did too.

“Mrs. Vale,” he said.

Vanessa stopped.

The entire courtyard seemed to hold its breath.

He did not accuse her of running.

Did not order her to the ground.

Did not complete an arrest.

He simply said her name.

That was enough.

Daniel stared at her.

“What were you going to do?”

“Nothing.”

The answer was too fast.

Elena turned toward the pool.

The water reflected sunset gold and emergency tension.

For a second, she saw her scar in the reflection.

A pale line across her ribs.

Vanessa had tried to make it ugly.

But scars are not ugly.

They are receipts.

Proof that something tried to end you and failed.

Elena faced Vanessa again.

“You should have checked what survived before you forged what didn’t.”

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

She understood there was more.

More than the screen.

More than the public accusation.

More than the Chief’s arrival.

But the full financial evidence stayed hidden.

The complete scheme remained unrevealed.
