Chapter 5

The scar had been private before Vanessa made it public.

Elena never hid it from shame.

She hid it from people who wanted stories they had not earned.

The bullet had torn through her left ribs during an operation tied to forged charitable transfers, shell companies, and a waterfront development fund that powerful families preferred never to discuss.

She survived.

Barely.

Two officers did not.

The city gave quiet honors because the case was sensitive.

Elena left active duty because recovery demanded time, and because some sacrifices are easier for departments to praise than to protect.

Vanessa had found only fragments.

An old complaint.

A sealed disciplinary reference.

A heavily edited file.

Enough to build a fake scandal if the audience already wanted one.

At the beach club, she projected Elena as corrupt.

Unstable.

Dangerous.

Then she laughed when guests stared at the scar.

Elena felt the old anger rise.

Not because of the wound.

Because Vanessa had used the dead.

The officers who were not there to defend themselves.

The case that remained sealed.

The sacrifice Vanessa had turned into gossip beside a swimming pool.

So when Chief Hayes saluted her, Elena did not break down.

She accepted it.

For herself.

For the people who should have been standing beside her.
