Chapter 7

Chief Hayes did not raise his voice.

Authority did not require it.

“Nobody leaves until my financial-crimes team secures everything.”

The sentence moved through the beach club like a door locking.

Several guests turned toward the exits.

The officers near the glass doors did not block them aggressively.

They simply remained in place.

Professional.

Still.

Certain.

Vanessa recoiled.

“You can’t hold people here.”

Chief Hayes looked at her.

“I can preserve an active scene while evidence is being secured.”

The word evidence made Daniel flinch.

Vanessa saw it.

Her anger shifted toward desperation.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

Elena spoke quietly.

“You put forged records on a public display.”

“You don’t know they were forged.”

Elena’s eyes did not move.

“I know exactly how they were made.”

That silenced Vanessa.

Not because it revealed the method.

It did not.

Not because it exposed the complete financial trail.

It did not.

But because Vanessa heard certainty in Elena’s voice.

The certainty of someone who had already seen the pattern.

Daniel stepped away from Vanessa by half a pace.

Small.

But public.

Her face tightened as if the distance hurt more than the Chief’s command.
