Chapter 3

Daniel Vale had not known about the screen.
That was what Elena noticed first.
His confusion was real.
His shame took longer.
He stood among the guests in his pale-blue summer suit, holding a glass he had forgotten to drink from, watching his wife destroy another woman’s name in public.
At first, he looked uncomfortable.
Then interested.
Then alarmed.
That progression mattered.
Daniel had believed some version of Vanessa’s story.
Maybe not all.
Maybe enough.
Elena had learned that lies rarely need full belief to do damage.
They only need hesitation.
Vanessa had told Daniel that Elena was dangerous.
A manipulator.
A former detective removed for misconduct.
A woman who would ruin reputations if allowed too close to the Vale family.
Daniel accepted it because it was easier than questioning his wife.
But then Chief Hayes saluted Elena.
Not casually.
Not politely.
Formally.
With the kind of respect that cannot be purchased at a beach club.
Daniel watched the guests go silent.
He watched officers near the doors.
He watched Elena stand still with wet eyes and a straight spine.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
For the first time, he did not look like a husband protecting his wife from an enemy.
May you like
He looked like a man realizing he had been standing beside the source of the danger.
