Chapter 8

The guests who had laughed now looked ashamed.
Not all of them.
Some looked fascinated.
Some afraid.
Some eager to pretend they had never enjoyed the cruelty.
Elena knew people.
Especially wealthy people.
They adjust morality according to risk.
When Vanessa controlled the room, they laughed at Elena’s scar.
When Chief Hayes saluted Elena, they lowered their phones.
When financial-crimes officers appeared, they remembered manners.
Elena did not need their apology.
She needed their memory.
Every guest had seen Vanessa’s display.
Every guest had heard her call Elena a criminal.
Every guest had heard Elena say the records were forged.
That mattered.
Vanessa had wanted witnesses for humiliation.
She had created witnesses for exposure.
Chief Hayes turned slightly toward Elena.
“Detective Cross.”
The title landed again.
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
Elena glanced at the Chief.
“I’m not active anymore.”
His voice softened.
“The city still remembers.”
For a moment, Elena’s eyes filled.
She blinked once and stayed composed.
Daniel saw that.
Maybe for the first time, he understood that the woman Vanessa had mocked was not chasing attention.
May you like
She had been trying to survive being dragged back into a wound.
