Chapter 11 - Amanda says I made her desperate

After admitting the staging, Amanda stopped denying the mechanics.

She attacked the marriage.

I had made her desperate.

That was her word.

She described years of:

My work overrunning family plans.

My habit of postponing repairs.

My refusal to consider Raleigh seriously.

My dismissing her safety concerns as anxiety.

Some true.

Then one email from me:

The pool is fine. You’re acting like there’s a shark in it.

I had sent that after she complained about the alarm battery.

Stupid.

Then:

I’ll fix the gate Saturday. Stop making everything an emergency.

Nine days.

Then Claire’s recital.

I missed.

Tyler’s dentist.

Missed.

Amanda carried more mental load.

All real.

Then she said:

“When nobody listens, you start documenting.”

Reasonable.

Then:

“Did Eric’s dismissiveness force you to move a ladder for a photo?”

Judge interrupted during temporary review:

“Ms. Dawson, answer conduct, not philosophy.”

“No.”

There.

Then Amanda sought unsupervised contact.

She had started therapy.

Parenting evaluation.

No prior abuse history.

Children missed her.

Tyler especially.

He asked weekly.

Child therapist Dr. Naomi Parker worked with both kids separately.

Claire:

Angry.

Nightmares about bars.

Fear of closed closets.

Tyler:

Pool fear.

Separation anxiety.

Repeated questions:

“Did Mom know?”

No adult gave him an answer beyond evidence.

Then Dr. Parker said:

“Tyler’s attachment to Amanda remains strong. Cutting her off indefinitely may not be clinically helpful if safe therapeutic contact can occur.”

I hated that.

But listened.

First therapeutic video call with Tyler.

Ten minutes.

Amanda cried.

Tyler cried.

She said:

“I’m sorry I wasn’t there.”

Good.

Then:

“I thought you were inside.”

Good.

No:

Dad should have fixed pool.

No:

Claire disobeyed.

Then Tyler:

“Did you make the pool bad?”

Amanda froze.

Therapist stepped in.

“We can answer simply.”

Amanda said:

“I moved things around the pool when I shouldn’t have.”

“Why?”

“I made a bad adult decision.”

Tyler:

“Were you trying to drown me?”

My heart stopped watching later through therapist summary.

Amanda said:

“No.”

That was true.

Then:

“I would never want that.”

Also true as far as evidence showed.

Tyler cried.

“I almost died.”

“I know.”

She did not say:

But you didn’t.

Good.

Then Claire refused contact.

No forcing.

Amanda accepted publicly.

Privately she sent Sarah? Not allowed. Through lawyer:

“I think Eric is poisoning her.”

No evidence.

Then custody evaluator, Dr. Martin Ellis, began.

Amanda’s counteroffensive:

I was using the incident to erase her.

I denied.

Then he asked:

“Would you support future relationship?”

“If safe and Claire wants it.”

“Tyler?”

“Yes.”

“Would you support Amanda ever parenting unsupervised again?”

I wanted to say no.

Instead:

May you like

“I don’t know yet.”

Better.
