Chapter 23 - Amanda’s appeal

Amanda’s appeal challenged:
Admission of the deleted checklist.
Certain child statements.
Sufficiency of felony recklessness evidence.
Her right.
The appellate process would take months.
Maybe longer.
We did not build our life around outcome.
But one immediate request:
Release pending appeal.
Denied after court considered sentence, child-safety conviction, and standard factors.
No new custody impact.
Then Amanda sent me one message through approved legal channel.
Not apology.
Practical:
Please make sure Tyler keeps his blue inhaler in school bag.
He had mild exercise-induced wheeze? Not introduced. Avoid new medical fact. Better:
Please make sure Claire gets her orthodontic consult in October.
At nine maybe orthodontic. Could be.
I checked calendar.
It was already scheduled.
I did not reply emotionally.
Through app:
Scheduled for October 14.
Done.
Then Tyler’s therapy.
He started gradual water reintroduction.
Not swimming pool.
Sink play.
Shallow therapy basin.
Blowing bubbles.
Learning:
Water is not always the black cover.
He hated first session.
Then tolerated.
No pressure to become swimmer hero.
Then Claire.
She stopped sleeping with bedroom door fully open.
First:
Chair against it? No.
Then halfway.
Then closed but unlocked.
One night she locked it.
I panicked.
Knocked.
She opened.
“I wanted privacy.”
Right.
Safety can become intrusion.
We installed bedroom lock that opened from inside and could be emergency-opened by me with tool.
She liked knowing she controlled it.
Then I removed every padlock from outdoor storage.
Not because locks evil.
Because we did not need them.
Then she said:
“You don’t have to change everything.”
I smiled.
May you like
“You’re right.”
That was progress too.
