Chapter 5 - Claire tells the story once
Claire’s forensic interview happened two days later.
Interviewer:
Rachel Stone.
Not therapist.
Not police detective leading her.
A trained child interviewer.
I did not sit in.
Amanda did not.
Claire started with school.
Her dog.
Our old golden retriever Max, who had died the year before.
Why was the cage still behind the shed?
We used it once for foster puppies during Max’s last summer.
Then storage.
I had told myself I would take it to donation.
Another:
I’ll do it Saturday.
Then the afternoon.
Claire said Amanda had been carrying papers around.
Taking photographs.
Of what?
Pool gate.
Ladder.
Alarm.
Cover.
Claire followed.
Why?
“She was acting weird.”
What did Amanda say?
“Go inside.”
Claire asked what she was doing.
Amanda said:
“Documenting.”
Then Claire saw her mother crouch beside the pool alarm.
“What did she do?”
“Touched the switch thing.”
“Could you see whether she turned it on or off?”
“I saw her finger. I don’t know.”
Good.
No adult conclusion inserted.
Then ladder.
Amanda pulled it toward pool.
Was ladder already attached?
Claire said:
“It was by the shed.”
That was major.
If true, Amanda placed it.
Then cover.
Amanda unrolled it partly.
Why?
“I asked.”
“What did she say?”
“So people can see how dangerous it is when your dad leaves things.”
There.
Not yet central secret.
But close.
Rachel asked:
“Did she say Dad left the ladder?”
“No.”
“Did she say she put it there?”
“No.”
Good.
Then Claire said:
“I told her she was lying.”
Amanda became angry.
Called Claire:
“Daddy’s spy.”
Claire said:
“I’m telling Dad.”
Then cage.
Amanda grabbed her wrist?
Claire said yes.
Any injury?
No.
She pushed Claire toward cage.
Claire refused.
Amanda said:
“You want to act like an animal following me around, sit with the animal stuff.”
That sentence sounded adult enough to be memorable.
Claire cried.
Amanda put her inside.
Closed.
Wrapped chain through door.
Padlock.
Then:
“She said when I stopped screaming she’d let me out.”
Did Amanda strike her?
“No.”
Did she threaten?
“She said Dad would blame me if he lost us.”
There.
Then Tyler.
Where was he?
Inside.
Claire saw him through back door later.
“Did Mom know he came outside?”
“I yelled.”
Could Amanda hear?
Claire did not know.
Timeline:
Amanda locked Claire around 3:39.
Walked into house.
Returned briefly? Claire said she saw Amanda near patio through gap.
Then car left.
Tyler came outside after.
He heard Claire crying.
He tried cage.
Asked:
“Where key?”
Claire:
“Mom has it.”
Tyler said:
“I get Daddy tools.”
He went toward shed.
Then saw pool?
Claire believed he stepped near ladder.
She yelled:
“Don’t.”
Tyler climbed first rung to look over cover? Why would he? Maybe a toy had rolled? Need exact.
Claire said his red ball was beside ladder.
He reached for it.
Foot slipped.
He fell between cover edge and pool wall.
Cover folded over him.
Claire screamed.
He surfaced once near ladder.
Reached through gap.
Fingers.
Then disappeared under cover.
She yelled for help until I arrived.
That was the story.
No one asked Claire to estimate exact minutes underwater.
Children are bad clocks.
Medical team could not establish precise submersion time.
Then one final disclosure.
Before Amanda drove away, Claire heard her talking on phone.
“Tell him I have the photos.”
