Chapter 26 - The last immediate decision

Three months after final custody order, Tyler’s therapist recommended his first visit to a real swimming pool.

Not ours.

Community therapy pool.

Warm.

Shallow.

Instructor trained in post-submersion fear.

I almost refused.

Tyler said:

“I want to.”

That decided more than my fear.

Claire did not go in.

She watched from bleachers.

I sat beside her.

Tyler stood on first step.

Water at ankles.

Then knees.

He grabbed instructor’s hand.

No black cover.

No ladder trap.

No hidden edge.

Amanda was not there.

She received a clinical update later through permitted channel.

Tyler blew bubbles.

Then cried.

Then tried again.

Ten minutes.

Done.

In the parking lot he said:

“I didn’t drown.”

“No.”

“Can I get ice cream?”

“Yes.”

Claire rolled her eyes.

“He gets ice cream for standing in water?”

“You were welcome to join.”

“No.”

“Then no complaint.”

She smiled.

Then my phone buzzed.

Message from Amanda’s counsel.

Her criminal appeal had been scheduled for argument later.

No decision.

Another:

Amanda requested that after release she first see Tyler in therapeutic setting and not ask Claire for contact until Claire’s therapist recommended.

That was new.

She was limiting herself before court forced her.

I forwarded to Dr. Ellis? Case closed, maybe Sarah and therapists.

Sarah replied:

Reasonable. No action needed now.

No action needed.

I liked those words.

Then Claire said:

“Is that Mom?”

“Her lawyer.”

“What does she want?”

I hesitated.

Age-appropriate.

“She says when she’s allowed to see Tyler later, she wants a therapist there. She isn’t asking you to visit.”

Claire looked at me.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

She exhaled.

That was the last active choice Amanda made in our immediate story.

Not a demand.

A limit.

Then I asked:

“How does that feel?”

“Like she finally knows I can say no.”

There.

That evening we ate ice cream in the rental kitchen.

Tyler spilled chocolate on his shirt.

Claire complained he got more toppings.

I told them both to clean up.

Normal conflict.

No one became evidence.

May you like

No one became leverage.

No one got locked anywhere.
