Chapter 14 - The relocation dies
Kessler Medical Systems withdrew the Raleigh relocation offer.
Not because Amanda was convicted.
No trial yet.
Because she could not commit to relocation date and family court barred moving the children.
They offered her:
A remote advisory role at $162,000.
No relocation bonus.
No retention package.
She accepted temporarily.
Financial loss:
Real.
Not “everything.”
Could she blame me?
She did.
Through deposition:
“If Eric had taken my concerns seriously, none of this would have happened.”
Sarah asked:
“None of what?”
Amanda paused.
“The divorce.”
“Tyler’s drowning?”
“No.”
“Claire’s confinement?”
“No.”
Good.
Then Amanda’s finances.
Legal fees increasing.
No hidden debt.
No substance addiction.
No affair.
Her motive remained:
Career.
Control.
Fear of losing children.
Fear of being dismissed.
Then family court evaluator found something important.
Amanda had previously used extreme “containment” once.
Not cage.
Three years earlier Claire, age six, had a tantrum and Amanda held bedroom door closed from outside for about five minutes.
I knew.
I had objected.
We argued.
She promised never again.
No physical injury.
No record.
I had forgotten.
Dr. Ellis asked:
“Why didn’t this change your view of her discipline?”
“I thought it was one terrible decision.”
Then medication? No need more.
Pattern:
When Amanda felt a child’s behavior threatened her control, she used physical containment.
Rare.
But real.
Then my pattern:
When Amanda raised concerns, I minimized until she escalated.
We were a bad system.
Again, not equal blame.
Then evaluator recommendation:
Children remain primarily with me.
Amanda supervised/therapeutic contact.
Tyler can progress faster.
Claire only when ready.
No relocation.
No equal custody while criminal case pending and insight incomplete.
Then Amanda asked for unsupervised two-hour visits with Tyler.
Denied.
Why?
She still minimized staging as “documentation technique.”
She needed to understand danger.
Then she changed language.
At next therapy session:
“I created an unsafe pool setup.”
Not:
Recreated.
Created.
That mattered.
Then she said:
“I left before restoring safety.”
Good.
Then:
“I locked Claire outside where I knew she could not get back into house.”
