During play therapy, Tyler spontaneously said:

“Mom put stairs in pool.”

The therapist did not probe deeply.

She documented and notified investigator because case open.

Detective Ortiz reviewed original forensic interview.

Tyler had been too medically fragile for detailed questioning then.

They scheduled one formal forensic interview now, months later, carefully.

He said:

“Mom put ladder.”

Did he see?

“Yes.”

From living room window.

Then:

“She made black blanket.”

Cover.

“Did Mom tell you to go outside?”

“No.”

“Did she tell you to stay inside?”

“Watch TV.”

There.

Then:

“Why did you go outside?”

“Claire yelling.”

“What were you trying to do?”

“Get key.”

“Where?”

“Daddy tools.”

Then red ball.

He saw it by pool.

Reached.

Slipped.

Consistent.

Then:

“Did Mom see you outside?”

“No.”

Important.

No knowledge.

Then he said:

“I thought cover was floor.”

This was new.

Did he walk onto it intentionally?

Maybe he stepped onto sagging edge thinking solid.

At six.

Pool cover danger.

Then medical team said exact mechanism did not change care.

Prosecution used only if admissible.

Defense questioned memory after months and family discussion.

Fair.

Then Tyler asked interviewer:

“Is Mom bad?”

She answered:

“I don’t decide whether people are bad.”

Good.

Then Claire finally agreed to one therapeutic written exchange with Amanda.

Amanda’s letter:

I locked you in the cage. You did not deserve that. I was angry because you saw me doing something I knew your father would disagree with. I should have stopped and listened. I should not have left. Tyler going to the pool was not your fault. You tried to help him.

Claire read twice.

Then:

“She didn’t say why she made pool dangerous.”

Therapist:

“What would you want her to say?”

“That she wanted Dad to look bad.”

Amanda’s letter had avoided motive.

Not ready.

Claire declined further contact.
