Chapter 18 - The verdict

The jury deliberated one day.

Verdict:

Guilty of felony reckless child endangerment related to Tyler.

Guilty of misdemeanor unlawful confinement of Claire.

Guilty of misdemeanor child endangerment for leaving children unsupervised under those conditions.

No greater intentional-harm charge existed.

No attempted murder.

Amanda cried quietly.

I felt sick.

Not relieved.

Not triumphant.

Claire was at school.

Tyler with my sister.

I did not tell them:

Mom is guilty.

Not like a headline.

We told them with therapist help.

Amanda had been found responsible for breaking laws by creating danger and locking Claire.

Sentencing later.

Then Amanda’s employer.

Remote advisory role suspended pending sentencing? Could be. Kessler placed her on unpaid administrative leave after felony conviction because role involved site safety oversight? Reasonable.

Her current employer? We said Kessler accepted remote role. So Kessler suspended.

Did she lose salary?

Temporarily.

Not all career forever.

Then her lawyers announced appeal planned.

Right.

Family court did not wait for appeal to address current custody.

Then evaluator update.

Amanda now admitted conduct fully?

After conviction, yes.

She wrote Claire another letter.

I moved the ladder, turned off the alarm, and unrolled the cover because I wanted photographs that made Dad look careless. I was wrong. I locked you away because you saw me. Tyler was hurt because I created danger and left. None of that was your fault.

That was the letter Claire had asked for.

She read it.

Then cried.

Then said:

“I don’t want to see her.”

Still.

Accountability does not purchase contact.

Then Tyler:

He wanted Mom.

That created different plans for siblings.

Family court can do that.

Not one contact schedule fits all.

Then house closing.

Completed.

Children and I moved into a rental townhouse with no pool.

Three bedrooms.

Small fenced yard.

No shed.

Claire checked closets first night.

All opened from inside.

I had never thought about that before.

She did.

Then Tyler asked:

“Can we get a pool someday?”

I said:

“Not now.”

May you like

No permanent promise.

Just not now.
