Chapter 2 - Victoria’s Smile Dies First

Victoria’s smile died before anyone else moved.

It did not disappear all at once.

First, the corners of her mouth trembled.

Then her wineglass lowered half an inch.

Then her eyes moved from Emma to the sealed board file at the far end of the table.

That was when Emma knew.

Victoria recognized the threat.

Not the full truth.

Not yet.

But enough.

Daniel stood so quickly his chair scraped against the marble floor.

“Emma.”

His voice tried to warn her.

Control her.

Remind her where she was.

Emma did not turn toward him immediately.

She kept her eyes on the board members.

Twelve powerful people who had sat through Victoria’s insult, Daniel’s coercion, and the public humiliation of a pregnant woman because wealth teaches rooms to wait for the strongest person to reveal themselves.

Now they were waiting for Emma.

The black folder rested against her side.

Her wedding ring glinted beneath the chandelier light.

Victoria recovered enough to laugh.

It sounded wrong.

Too sharp.

Too high.

“My dear, this is embarrassing.”

Emma slowly looked at her.

“You said that already without saying the word.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Sit down.”

Emma’s gaze moved to him.

“No.”

The room shifted.

Such a small word.

Such a devastating one.

Daniel’s nostrils flared.

His jaw worked like he was grinding down panic into anger.

“You are making this worse.”

Emma looked at the black postnuptial folder.

“For whom?”

No answer came.

One attorney at the table cleared his throat, then stopped when Victoria shot him a furious look.

Emma noticed.

Everyone noticed.

The sealed board file remained untouched.

That untouched file became louder than any speech.

Victoria raised her chin.

“You are emotional. You are pregnant. You are overwhelmed.”

Emma’s lips trembled once.

Then stilled.

“No, Victoria. I am awake.”

Daniel reached toward the folder in Emma’s hand.

She stepped back before he touched it.

The movement was clean and precise.

A director near the far end of the table stood halfway from his chair, then froze.

Emma looked at him.

He looked away.

That told her enough.

They knew there was something in the sealed file.

Maybe not all of it.

But enough to fear the next sentence.
