Chapter 9 - Ask Your Board
Emma stood beside her chair, unbroken.
The black folder remained against her side.
The sealed company file remained at the far end of the table.
The gold pen lay useless near the crystal glasses.
Daniel’s company documents sat scattered near his plate, suddenly looking less like authority and more like props in a failed performance.
Victoria gripped the table.
Her diamonds shook.
Her breathing became shallow.
Daniel stared at the sealed file, then at Emma, then at the directors.
“What is she talking about?”
No one answered.
That silence destroyed him.
He had expected loyalty.
Or at least fear.
But the board had entered the silence differently now.
They were not protecting Daniel.
They were calculating how much of tonight they had just witnessed and what it might mean if Emma was right.
Victoria forced herself upright.
“She is bluffing.”
Emma looked at her.
“Then ask them.”
Victoria’s lips trembled.
Daniel turned toward the nearest director.
“Is there something I need to know?”
The director’s face tightened.
He looked at the sealed file.
Then at Emma.
Then at Victoria.
“I think,” he said carefully, “we should not proceed with any signature tonight.”
Victoria inhaled sharply.
Daniel froze.
Emma lowered her eyes for one second.
Not triumph.
Relief that someone at the table had finally said the smallest safe truth.
No signature tonight.
Not the final decision.
Not the ownership percentage.
Not the inheritance clause.
Only refusal to continue the coercion.
Victoria’s voice shook with rage.
“You work for this family.”
The director looked at Emma again.
His answer was careful.
“I work for the company.”
The distinction changed the room.
Daniel’s face lost the last of its color.
Emma looked back at Victoria.
“Before I surrender anything, ask your board whose signature controls every share.”
This time, no one laughed.
No one corrected her.
No one told her to sit down.
The question remained unanswered because the answer was still sealed.
