Chapter 6 - Daniel’s Panic Reaches His Face

Daniel had built his life on never looking afraid.
Even when markets shifted.
Even when deals failed.
Even when his father’s old directors questioned him behind closed doors.
Even when Emma asked why certain signatures never appeared where they should have.
He always became colder.
Sharper.
More certain.
Now fear reached his face in front of everyone.
It started at his eyes.
Then his mouth.
Then his hand, which opened and closed at his side as if searching for a document he could use as a weapon.
Emma saw the moment and felt no joy.
Only exhaustion.
She had once wanted Daniel to look at her and understand.
Now she only wanted the room to stop pretending he had not.
“Emma,” he said, softer.
That softness arrived like a trap.
She recognized it.
Victoria did too and hated that he had switched tactics.
Daniel stepped closer, palms open.
“Let’s not make this bigger than it is.”
Emma looked at the table.
At the black folder.
At the pen.
At the sealed file.
At the twelve witnesses.
“It is exactly as big as it is.”
He lowered his voice.
“You don’t know what you’re risking.”
Emma’s hand moved protectively over her stomach.
“That sentence used to scare me.”
“And now?”
“Now I know you only say it when you’re the one at risk.”
A restrained gasp came from the far side of the table.
Daniel’s eyes flashed.
Victoria slammed her wineglass down so hard red wine jumped against the rim.
Crystal rattled.
“You will not destroy my son.”
Emma looked at her mother-in-law.
“I did not bring the postnuptial folder.”
Victoria froze.
Emma continued.
“I did not call this dinner.”
Daniel’s breathing grew shallow.
“I did not invite the board to watch a pregnant woman be humiliated.”
The room went still.
Emma’s voice dropped.
“You did.”
The accusation did not need volume.
It had architecture.
Every object in the room supported it.
The folder.
The pen.
The sealed file.
The untouched dinner plates.
The witnesses.

Daniel stepped back.
